Background music has been used in diverse areas of marketing and known to influence purchasing behaviors of customers. It is presented simultaneously with target messages and the main content should be kept intact for some time to aid decision process. The maintenance of this information is related with auditory working memory. This background music is often compressed due to the time limit in presentation. The effects of background music compression on working memory and purchasing decision are not known in detail. In this study, purchasing decision process and auditory working memory were analyzed in terms of compression ratios of the background music. A total of 37 participants of early twenties joined the study. The profile of product involvement was examined through multi-dimensional scaling to select representative products: high and low involvement products (smartphone and ballpoint pen). The first movement of Mozart Symphony 40 (K550) was chosen as a background music. Four presentation conditions were no background music, background music with compression ratio of 1 (no compression), background music with compression ration of 0.75, and background music with compression ratio of 0.5 (double speed). The main marketing messages were synthesized in a female voice and presented in 60 dB level with the background music of various compression ratios. Collected data were the number of recalled items used in decision process and final purchasing decisions expressed in a Likert scale of -3 to 3. Data were analyzed through repeated ANOVA with the significance level of 0.05. The results were as follows: First, digit expansion result showed a stable level of working memory capacity under four presentation conditions. Second, the effects of compression on purchasing decision measures were not observed in the low involvement product while some differences were noted in the high involvement counterpart in an inhibitory way. Third, the high involvement product indicated an increased usage level of working memory resources in four presentation conditions. No direct corresponding relationship was found between working memory and purchasing behavior measures in this data. In summary, the total working memory capacity remained constant under the four presentation conditions. The high involvement product consumed more working memory resources. The increased level of usage, however, did not lead to positive decision changes. This analysis may be useful as a quantitative tool for probing the effects of temporal compression on auditory working memory and purchasing behaviors of customers.
