This research examines fan work of Korea-based Chinese fans whose decision to move to South Korea was largely influenced by their fan interest in the Hallyu (Korean Pop Culture Wave). While living and engaging in fan activities in Korea, they hold various social identities. The purpose of this research is to grasp transnational mobility as a stage in the life course of these young women who grow in the spread of consumer-driven popular culture, and to expand the meaning of fandom located only in its relationship with certain industries and stars. To do this, concepts of 'fan affect' and 'transnationalism' were used in analyzing their fan activities and fan migration to Korea drawing on the methods of qualitative interviews, participant observations and literature reviews.
The women covered in this research were the only daughters born in middle-class families newly emerged after the Chinese economic reform in the late 1970s and received considerable material and spiritual support from their parents in the process of migration to Korea. The change in perception of women's image due to the expansion of the consumer-driven popular culture in China and the overseas study brokerage industry that has been caused by overseas study boom make it easier for the fans to migrate to Korea. In addition, the Korean government's relaxed tourist visa and student visa policies provide the female enthusiasts with institutional conditions for migration. Fans move to Korea driven by their paensim(literally translated 'fan-heart' or 'heart/mind of a fan') to meet their stars and to accomplish goals such as pursuits of academic career, of professional careers related to Hallyu and of lifestyles based on cultural consumption. When the goals of academic achievement encountered during the young adulthood(or adolescence) meet those of paensim, they may choose to move to Korea. This implies that Hallyu migration is a migration of intimacy propelled by the intimate sentiment the fans developed with their stars, and that it is used as a life strategy.
These Korea-based female fans are doing various fan activities centered around stars. They produce certain images of their stars both online and offline. And to secure funds for fan work, they are actively engaged in fan-economic activities such as providing and making profits from proxy/agent fan services, and fan merchandise production and sales. Competition and division can occur within the migrant fandom due to the desire to become more intimate with the stars or to hold higher status inside. The transnational network of image, information, goods and desires is created with these women's migration and fan works at times forming unique mediascape, financescape and ethnoscape. The female fans who create fan affect through producing favorable image of their stars reevaluate their status as regards their relationship with the stars and industry. They actively incorporate fan activities into the market economy, thereby laying the foundation for their material life in Korea. These images of fandom have not been dealt with in the existing fandom studies that have focused on digital space only.
The women encounter numerous conflicts in the process of fan work. They sometimes witness the gap between the stars' real image and popular image, and confront borders of nation-states in the wake of unpredictable political tensions such as those instigated by the THAAD missile defense system. Moreover, the process of performing both the fan activity and the social role is limited by time. Nevertheless, even amid these conflicts, they continue to perform fan activities. Their fan work is not temporary because they grew up in an environment where the country began economic restructuring centering on cultural industry and Hallyu began to enter into China since the mid-1990s. For these reasons, being a fan is an important category of personality for the long-term fans of Hallyu. Through active and persistent fan work, they enable fan affect to operate sustainably and create their own self-worth as a fan and the value of individual life. Woman fans venture on migration to Korea to continue a body of work they have loved and become familiar with since childhood, fulfill their desire of building intimate relationship with the stars, plan a career related to Hallyu and pursue a fancied lifestyle.
This research reveals that the fan activities of women that have been evaluated as emotional, consuming, private and temporary are combined with their life strategy as they become associated with migration in the global era.
