The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze balance ability difference and the thickness difference of quadriceps femoris and transversus abdominis muscle between visual feedback-using squats and no visual feedback-using squats and to identify the effects of such exercises. This study targeted 30 college students in their 20s, and they were divided into a group of 15 squat exercising college students using visual feedback and a group of 15 squat exercising college students not using visual feedback. From January 2017 through March 2017, each subject conducted a total of three sets of squats with 15 reps per set for eight weeks, three times a week. A 15-minute break was offered between each set of squats. Measurements were made before the exercise and at the time when the last exercise ended in eight weeks. Balance ability was measured through LOS, and each muscle’s thickness was measured through ultrasonic images. The study results are presented below:
1. After total left, right, front, and rear balance ability within each experimental group and control group was measured before and after squats, the two groups showed significant differences (p.05) was shown before squats; however, statistically significant differences (p<.05) were shown after squats. 2. As a result of paired samples t-tests, after the thicknesses of the left and right quadriceps femoris, vastus lateralis, and transversus abdominis muscles were measured within each experimental group and control group, significant differences (p.05) was revealed before squats; however, statistically significant differences (p<.05) were shown after squats. 3. The experimental and control groups showed a significant difference (p.05) was shown before and after squats.
In conclusion, both the groups using visual feedback and no using visual feedback showed statistically significant differences at the time of ending squats for eight weeks, compared to before squats in terms of balance ability and muscles’ thickness increase. Although the vastus medialis did not show significant difference, the muscle revealed a relatively similar increase in thickness. From this, the squats using visual feedback can be regarded as a more effective and stable squat exercising method than the squats not using visual feedback.
