The effectiveness of career coaching programs using storytelling based on individual strength on the career adaptability of adolescents원문보기

This research, based on positive psychology, is an attempt to make individuals(middle school students) recognize their strength, make rational decisions about their choice of high school, and to ultimately enhance their future planning. By doing so the purpose of this research is to prove the effectiveness of career coaching that utilises strength based story telling in enhancing career adaptability. This research project recruited 15 3rdyearstudentvolunteersfromJmiddleschool, J-gu, Seoul. They were divided into two groups: 8 as control group and 7 as experimental group. With the experimental group we performed 6, 50-minute group-coaching programs, once a week after pre-testing. After this, we ran post-tests and after 1 month, we conducted examinations. With the control group we performed pre-test, post-test and later examinations but without any group coaching program. At this stage we verified the hypothesis of the effect of career coaching programs using storytelling on career adoptability. We employed SPSS 22 and performed technical statistical analysis, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, independent specimen t-test, matching sample and repeated measure ANOVA, for data analysis, effectiveness verification and statistical processes. The outcomes of this research, and discussions arising from it are detailed below. First, the Career-Coaching Program using strength-based storytelling did not show noticeable statistical results on students’ curiosity, interest, control or confidence. However, their average grades after the program rose in comparison to their pre-program grades. Therefore, the Career-Coaching Program can be said to have produced positive results on career adaptability. Second, this research suggests the storytelling method is suitable for the recently emphasized creativity and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) education program. Furthermore, in the complex and rapidly changing modern environment, an individual’s adaptability (especially in career) is of the utmost importance. Thus, in order to assist middle school students in the changing career market, it is crucial for careers education to promote students’ career adaptability. Finally, middle school is the period that offers great opportunities for development: self-realization, talent & aptitude, opportunities etc. Thus, there is a need for studies of methods that will encourage students to systematically investigate various career paths in order not to limit or constrain their career choices. Therefore, it is hoped that this research will help in the provision of realistic and helpful career education and further, that it will be a trigger for an increase of research on ‘Strength based storytelling career coaching’ programs.
