Soil tillage is a biologically refining technology which is relatively simple and economical process that promote aerobic biodegradation with the help of microorganisms to purify soil contaminated with petroleum oil. However, it is greatly influenced by various environmental factors such as moisture, temperature, nutrients, etc. and so it is arduous to reduce the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) to a concentration below 1000 mg/kg. To overcome the complications of soil cultivation method, a combination of chemical oxidation and bioaugmentation method improves the removal efficiency of soil-oil contamination. Chemical oxidation treatment is relatively less time consuming method which enhances the degradation of oil with higher efficiency. Therefore, chemical oxidation when combined prior to biodegradation treatment, it is possible to degrade the polluted oil to low concentration. When the oxidation and the biodegradation treatment are combined, a higher efficiency is achieved for soil remediation. However, due to the channeling phenomenon of the oxidizing solution and the oxidation reaction of the surface layer, it is effective to the shallow soil layer and difficult to remove the contaminants in the deep soil. In order to reduce the channeling phenomenon of oxidants, surfactant was added to them which in turn enhance the homogeneity of reagents into soil by foam formation using air. Surfactant foam have already been tested that reduced the effect of channeling phenomena into the soil. Surfactants themselves have the advantage of lower surface tension and high permeability. It is difficult to enter the hydrogen peroxide solution evenly throughout the soil up to deep soil due to the vigorous oxidation reaction in the surface of soil by forming a layer which hinders the entrance of oxidants up to deep soil. In this study, we investigated that sodium persulfate oxidized the crude oil at a lower concentration with higher permeability than using hydrogen peroxide treatment prior to biodegradation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the soil-TPH removal efficiency by sodium persulfate oxidation followed by biodegradation foam application method and to compare it with soil cultivation method. The objectives of this oxidation-biodegradation coupling process which improves permeation rate of liquid for oil purification in soil were categorized into following three points: First aim of this study was to find the optimum concentration of sodium persulfate suitable for TPH oxidation in unsaturated soils. The surfactant foam containing sodium persulfate was applied directly over the of the oil-contaminated unsaturated soil. The infiltration rate of sodium persulfate solution and its effect to the TPH oxidation were evaluated at the same time. The second purpose of this study was to compare the infiltration of sodium persulfate foam and hydrogen peroxide foam into the unsaturated soil. Finally, the third objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of oxidation and microbial degradation combined foam application process to remove soil-TPH using sodium persulfate as oxidant. All these processes were performed to minimize the disturbances for degradation of the soil-TPH and input energy by the foam application process into unsaturated soil. The following results were achieved by carrying out the experiments that meets the above-mentioned research purpose: The highest infiltration rate was shown by 0.1% AOS (surfactant). The infiltration rate of sodium persulfate foam was significantly enhanced by using 0.1% AOS than using solution. Also, it was found that the infiltration of sodium persulfate exceeded to hydrogen peroxide foam. The 3days stabilized soil-TPH removal rate of the 5% hydrogen peroxide foam and 5mN sodium persulfate foam process were obtained as 40 and 47% respectively. The degradation rate of the recalcitrant hydrocarbon fraction(C18-C22) by 5mN sodium persulfate was 12% higher than using 5% hydrogen peroxide. The TPH reduction rate of the 50mN sodium persulfate foam was found to be 62% which was 18% higher than using 5% hydrogen peroxide foam. The respective degradation rate of the recalcitrant fraction (C18-C22) was obtained as 40% and 56% by using 5% hydrogen peroxide and 50 mN sodium persulfate. The biodegradation process(landfarming) reduced the soil-TPH concentration from 6,000 to 1,989 mg/kg after 35 days while TPH was reduced to 1,102 mg/kg by using combined oxidation-biodegradation foam method using sodium persulfate (50mN) as oxidant. We also evaluated the ability to transmit hydrogen peroxide and sodium persulfate into unsaturated soils. The maximum soil-water content in surface layer was 0.190 (water m3 / soil porosity m3) when using hydrogen peroxide and the deep layer had a very low value of 0.080. On the other hand, the soil-water content when using 50 mN sodium persulfate to the surface layer increased to a maximum value of 0.280 and the maximum moisture permeability was about 0.210. The changes of soil-TPH concentration were compared by applying sodium persulfate and hydrogen peroxide foam to the top of contaminated soil. By using sodium persulfate, the surface and deep layer TPH were reduced to 2,274 and 2,428 mg/kg respectively. However, in the case of hydrogen peroxide, surface and deep layer TPH were found to be 2,390 and 4,333 mg/kg respectively. This is because the infiltration rate of the hydrogen peroxide solution is low which limits the removal of the soil-TPH.
