ABSTRACT A Study on characterization in of Cao yu Hwang, Kyo-Sung Dept. of Theatre The Graduate School of Sangmyung University The existing analyses of have focused on social aspects of the play, such as “raising issues of women’s rights” or “raising issues related to the feudal family order.” The then Chinese society was undergoing a transitional period with radical social changes after the Xinhai Revolution, and people were expressing their heightened complaints about the existing social system. In this regard, has been understood as “highlighting and criticizing existing social issues,” and the play has also been critically reviewed in this context. Therefore, by stating that the creative motive of was “only a certain primitive emotion,” the play’s author explained that the play was not aiming to criticize social structure, but to lay bare the “fundamental aspects of the human.” Therefore, this study aimed to explore the “theatrical aesthetics” and “theatricality” of by examining those fundamental aspects of the human in the play. brings about the intense “tragedy” of “a weak human overwhelmed by the enormous fate,” demonstrating that the question―“How can such a tragedy be embodied” in the play’s theatrical aesthetics?―points to the theatricality of the play. The tragedy of starts with “complex and intertwined relationships among the characters.” Each character exposes his or her own tragedy and conflicts with others amid such complex relationships, and the resulting destruction of these characters brings about a “catharsis” from the audience. In other words, the theatrical aesthetics of begins with the “tragedy that each character possesses under a complex relationship” and ultimately ends with the theatricality of the play. In this regard, the aim of this study was to investigate the tragedy of each character through the process of his or her characterization to identify the theatricality of . Before examining each character in Chapter Ⅱ, the discussion focuses on “theatrical devices” that help reveal the theatricality of the play. Theatrical devices introduced in this chapter are “the existence of the prologue and the epilogue,” “the repeated relationship and the cruelty of fate,” as well as “incest, fate and humans” and “closed windows, Zhou Puyuan’s estates.” These devices have been derived from the relationships among the characters in . They speak of the existence of a “fateful and immense force,” as well as the mutual relationship between humans and fate in that these “cannot be controlled by certain individuals.” The aim of the study in Chapter Ⅲ was to explore the tragedy of each character through the process of characterization. Zhou Puyuan is the “origin of all evils,” the source that gives birth to the tragedy of . Lu Sifeng and Zhou Chong are the “objects of pure sacrifice,” demonstrating the cruelty of fate. Zhou Fanyi is the “oppressed passion,” and there is a “desperateness” to her life. Zhou Ping and Lu Dahai, who are “sons of the same father,” are the victims of family discord linked to their relationship with their father. Lu Shiping is the “resistant of the fate,” expressing the “futility” of her efforts as a mother to sacrifice and save her son. Lu Gui is the “mediator of the fate” who, through his role in the play, reveals the transformation of the continuance of coincidences into the inevitable. So far, this paper has examined the characterizations in to identify its theatricality. The theatricality in demonstrates that is not merely a “play about social issues.” By showcasing the intense tragedy through the correlation between fate and humans, highlights issues surrounding the “existence of the human being.” The characters in lay bare their “strong will” to live within their own means. Such strong will, as it clashes with fate, causes the audience to have questions about the human existence. Therefore, should be understood as a play that explores the existence of human beings.
