The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in young children and teachers through forest activities in the kindergartens in the metropolitan area and what factors affect forest activities. Since forest activities is active in the forest, it is affected by physical conditions such as climate and environment, and psychological conditions such as worrying mind. In this kind of environment, this study is to examine what kind of young children’s experience in the forest kindergartens, what kind of process they experience and changes, and what kind of experiences teachers cope with during the operation of forest kindergartens, how they overcome difficulties, and what causes the changes and development of teachers’ thinking. In addition, the researchers tried to find out what factors affect the forest activities in social culture and climate. The purpose of the study is as follows: 1. What are the young child's changes in the process of forest activities? 2. What are the teacher’s changes in the process of forest activities? 3. What factors affect our forest activities in social and cultural climate?
Before starting the research, the researchers received regular lectures for the forest kindergarten in overseas training, forest kindergarten theory and practice in graduate courses. With the continuing interest in the forest kindergarten, the researchers introduced the forest kindergarten curriculum into the kindergarten curriculum in the beginning. The research field for this study is the two kindergartens in which the researchers implement the forest kindergarten program once a week. The forest kindergarten opened from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and young childrens arrived at the forest to eat snacks, play themes and play freely according to the plan. The pre-planned forest activity theme was flexible at teachers’ discretion. Together with the forest activity expert once a month, the forest activity was carried out for a certain period of time. The subjects of this study were 12 teachers at 3, 4, and 5 years old. The directors have been operating the forest kindergarten for more than 5 years in the firld of education and participated in the forest kindergarten education, the domestic society related to the forest kindergarten, and the overseas training. Teachers took training and education for forest kindergartens as novice and veteran teachers. The data of this study consisted of self reports and focused questionnaires by teachers according to the research purpose. Teachers took notes or memorized the weekly or biweekly activities of the forest kindergarten and wrote down the self report. The focused questionnaires were conducted two times by collecting additional in-depth data needed in this study. After the data were collected, they were analyzed using grounded theory. In other words, data were analyzed in the order of source data, conceptualization and categorization of data. The conclusions about the change of the young children and the teacher and the factors influencing the forest activity were derived. The conclusions of the study were in the follow: Firstly, through the forest kindergarten curriculum, young child were adapting to forest and forest activities. The responses in the adaptation process were pleasure, active play, nature observation, tension and anticipation. Experience in the adaptation process occurred in the meeting with the forest. Meeting with strange and uncomfortable situations such as forests, new contacts with tension, meeting with forest creatures. Secondly, through the forest activities, young child were growing while experiencing a new world in the forest. The new experience was physically stubborn, making decisions in a strange place, coping with the environment on its own, creatively working in the forest, knowing public order and social promises, meeting seasonal flow and living things. Thirdly, young childrens adapt and grow in physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects. Physical adjustment took place in the process of traveling to the forest, walking long, and playing with nature in the forest. Cognitive adaptation was achieved by manipulating or thinking through natural processes or by manipulating or thinking through natural processes. Emotional adaptation was accomplished through experience with nature, awe, sympathy with forest life, sense of security and confidence. Fourthly, the teachers’ initial response in forest activities was worry and negative prejudice about it. However, the teachers’ negative prejudice disappeared quickly when he saw the forest activity of the young children. Teachers’ adaptation was achieved by adapting to various experiences in the forest, experiencing the situation-centered teaching process, having confidence and being accustomed, and supporting the professors. Fifthly, in the forests, teachers were growing by increasing reflective thinking and teaching experience. Forest activities have allowed teachers to have time for trial and error and reflective thinking. Teachers’ experiences in teaching activities led to the improvement of classroom and forest activity linkage, program, teaching ability and teacher growth. Sixthly, the intervention of the ‘forest activist’ became an opportunity for young childrens to increase the knowledge of the forest activities and to consider new teaching-learning activities. However, the difference between the limited time and the teaching attitude made the teachers uncomfortable. Seventhly, environmental factors such as climate, weather, fine dusts, pests and insects, places of activity, parental and social awareness, and the amount of time activities were the factors that affected forest activities. Environmental pollutants such as fine dusts and pests were negative factors in the operation of forest activities, but climate, weather, places of activity, and insects were positive or negative influences. Lastly, forest activities was influenced by positive and negative factors influencing forest activities. The forest activities were a process of motivation and enjoyment through these positive factors and a process of adapting and growing through a series of processes that go beyond the barrier of resistance through negative factors.
