The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of maternal parenting stress and parenting behavior on language development in Young children and to promote language development in Young children through desirable linguistic interaction with Young children by aiming for positive emotions and proper parenting behaviors from the mother.
The subjects of the study to achieve its purpose are as follows:
Research problem 1. What is difference in language development in Young children with respect to the general background variables, i.e. age, level of education, employment, and number of children, of the mother?
Research problem 2. What is the relationship between the parenting stress and behavior of the mother and language development in Young children?
Research problem 3. What effect has maternal parenting stress on language development in Young children?
Research problem 4. What effect has maternal parenting behavior on language development in Young children?
For this study, 121 mothers and children, 3 years of age, attending private and public childcare centers were surveyed. As for research tools, the parenting stress measuring instrument developed by Gihyeon Kim and Heegyeong Gang(1997) was used to measure maternal parenting stress and the index developed by Juhee Park(2001) was used to investigate maternal parenting behavior. Moreover, the inspection tool developed by Yeongtae Kim, Taeje Seong and Yungyeong Lee(2003) was used to gage the language development in children. Through SPSS 23.0 statistical program, Cronbach's α analysis, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed to analyze the result.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, there was no significant difference in the development of receptive, expressive and integrated language in Young children with respect to the general background variables of the mother;
Second, there was a significant correlation between the maternal parenting stress and behavior and language development in Young children. The higher the maternal parenting stress, there was less positive behavior and indifference from the mother to the child. Moreover, the higher the maternal parenting stress, the development of receptive, expressive and integrated language in Young children decreased.
In correlation between maternal parenting behavior and language development in Young children, the mother's avoidance in interaction with her child deterred development of their receptive, expressive and integrated language;
Third, the maternal parenting stress had a significant effect on the language development in Young children. In other words, if a mother experiences continued parenting stress in specific circumstances, it adversely affected the development in receptive, expressive and integrated language; and
Fourth, overprotection, conditional love, uninvolvedness and physical and emotionally negative parenting behavior also adversely affected the development in expressive and integrated language.
