The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the violence in Gong Ji-young's full-length novels and short stories through the medium of gender performativity theory as described by Judith Butler in Gender Trouble. This thesis will show how the representations of violence in her works have evolved insofar as they relate to gender, as well as how they relate to the themes of her works.
Violence is traditionally considered to be a masculine act. Gender performativity suggests that everything is gendered through repetition, reiteration, and context, which indicates that our perceptions of gender may be biased. If this is the case then violence is only considered masculine based on cultural and societal bias. However, this perception of violence may differ if examined by a writer who deviates from the traditional masculine/feminine binary in some way. If a female, homosexual, transgender, or otherwise gender-aware writer writes an act of violence, then it is possible that that act of violence may not be gendered as masculine.
Gong Ji-young's works were chosen for this study because she is a female writer who is known for many of her works of feminist literature, including “Go Alone Like A Rhinoceros Horn”, “A Good Woman,” “My Sister Bongsoon”, among others, which indicates an awareness of gender in some way. In addition, research on her overall work is lacking. Therefore, a comprehensive study comparing all over her works would provide meaningful research into an as of yet under-researched area.
Five types of violence (political violence, gender-based violence, suicide, child abuse, and violent threats) are identified and their gendered representation is examined. Based on research, it is found that the gendered representation of violence is not necessarily masculine, and varies depending on the motivation, the cause, the method, the person causing the violence, the person being the recipient of the violence, and the result of the violence. In part III, violent acts that appear in that author's works are are discussed in terms of the five types of violence and whether they fulfill the traditional gendered representation of violence or not.
In part IV, her works are split into three genres: 1980s and 1980s Reminiscence Literature, Feminism and Women's Issues Literature, and 2000s and Societal Issue Literature. Each work of literature that features violence is discussed in terms of the violence that they contain, connecting the violence to the themes of each individual story. It is discovered that the works that feature a deviation in the representation of their gendering of violence include “My Sister Bongsoon,” “Grandmother Never Dies”, “Our Happy Time,” and “The Crucible”. These works follow the overall trend in the shift of types of violence that are present in her literature, as well as the types of themes that are commonly seen in her works.
This thesis uses gender performativity to analyze the gendering of violence in Gong Ji-young's works. Through this method of research it was possible to examine the evolution of the representations of violence in Gong Ji-young's works as well as the evolution of themes in her works. Additionally, it showed that a non-masculine writer may write violence in a different or subversive way than the tradition of violence may otherwise be viewed.
