This study aims to show the case of community-based alternative literacy education which is combined with art and cultural program, Hangul program, citizenship program, and group activity. This study suppose that the purpose of literacy education for elderly is neither contributing to ‘national competitiveness’ nor ‘overissue the diploma’ as the expression of unschooled. In order to achieve this purpose, the research questions are as follows. First, what is the context of life of the elderly women who participate ? Second, what is the experience of the elderly women participating in the ? Third, what is the characteristic of the experience in ? The case study method is used to solve these research questions. The research participants are six illiterate elderly women who have three years of learning experience in . An in-depth interview is conducted for an average of one hour and thirty minutes. The researcher conducted participatory observation as an assistant teacher of the Hangul program. Through the participatory observation, the researcher collects data such as interview, the collection of class works, and movies which are the result of group activities. An interview with management team leader and Hangul teacher, the newspaper articles, and blogs are collected as additional data. The findings of the study are as follows. First, the context of life of the elderly women is the driving force to change their lives through learning. The life of illiterate elderly women could be expressed as ‘I am illiterate’, ‘vicarious satisfaction’, and ‘struggle’. Their lives are the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, pain. However, not all of them are negativities, positive attitudes such as vicarious satisfaction and needs to voluntary work and social participation are also appeared. These desires are linked to learning. Second, the experience of illiterate elderly women in could be expressed as ‘a place to get knowledge in every way’, ‘mutual understanding’, ‘this is not forgotten until death’, and ‘learning without satisfaction’. , which is a place to get knowledge in every way, the sense of community is made through the decision-making with teachers. The teachers and the illiterate elderly women are in horizontal relationship. Also, the art and cultural program develop group activities. The achievement of these group activities are established and become an unforgettable memory for learners. These experiences made the learners to continue to participate in .
