The existing suspension design process is designed and developed based on the performance goals at the system level without considering the performance from the vehicle's whole point of view. In addition, large design problems such as vehicle design are complex and have many design variables, which reduces the efficiency and convergence of Multidisciplinary optimal design such as ride comfort and handling. Therefore, many researches have applied the target cascading method to fundamentally solve these design problems. In this paper, to improve the ride comfort and handling performance of commercial vehicles, define and propose suspension system optimization design process based on target cascading method by defining design model and analysis model for each level through multi-level modeling hierarchy. The main results are as follows. First, a vehicle dynamic model library of commercial vehicles with hierarchical structures has been developed to apply the target cascading method. Modeling is based on multi-body dynamics, and object - oriented modeling techniques were used to facilitate model changes and modifications. Second, a test method and performance index to evaluate ride comfort and handling were selected, and a virtual test environment for each test was constructed. In addition, an analysis model was constructed to verify the validity of the developed vehicle dynamics library and the accuracy of prediction of ride comfort and handling performance was verified. Third, the optimal design was performed to verify the effectiveness of the suspension system optimization design process based on target cascading method. First, at the vehicle level, meta model based sequential approximate optimization was carried out with the objective function of maximized ride comfort and handling performance of the previously verified vehicle. As a result, the optimal design proposal (hard point, force element characteristic) was derived, and the ride comfort and handling performance were improved than the base model. The design problem of the component level is to design components (air spring, leaf spring) satisfying the force element characteristic which is the design goal transferred from the vehicle level, parameters to implement force element characteristics were derived using genetic algorithms. Through this design process, if the optimal design is performed considering the target performance of the vehicle from the initial stage of the design, the existing suspension design problem can be improved, optimum suspension components (hard point, spring, damper, bushing) can be designed. When the design process developed from this study is applied to large design problems, such as vehicles, that are complex and have many design variables, it is expected that the efficiency and convergence of the optimal design process can be improved and the design period can be shortened.
