A Case Study of the Aroma Therapy Concurrent Art Therapy for the Stress and Self-Esteem of the Unmarried Women with High Depression

This is a case study to investigate how aroma therapy concurrent art therapy is used to change the stress and self-esteem of unmarried women with depression. 14 sessions were performed from July to September, 2017, twice a week for 90 minutes. In order to investigate the effects of this program, three kinds of scales; stress perception scale, stress coping scale, self-esteem scale were used pre and post for comparing and analyzing. Six questions about psychological and physical stress symptom through the aroma therapy self-reported checklist were examined by the subjects at every session. In addition, it was analyzed not only the change of the narrative, verbal and nonverbal behavior of the subjects but also through the change of their stress coping ability and self-esteem during the process of the session.
In this study, it was found that aroma therapy concurrent art therapy program is effective in improving stress self-esteem of unmarried women with high depression. The conclusions obtained from this study are summarized as follows.
First, aroma therapy concurrent art therapy has a positive effect on the stress of the unmarried women with high depression.
Second, aroma therapy concurrent art therapy was effective in improving self-esteem by forming positive self-image of unmarried women with high depression.
Third, as aroma therapy concurrent art therapy was conducted each session, the subjects changed negative emotions positively, accepted stress-related behaviors aggressively and showed the ability to cope with stress factors. It was showed that they found their potential, strength and energy and formed a positive self-image.
By applying aroma therapy, an alternative to the art therapy program, it let the unmarried women with high depression feel emotional stability. In the art activity process, they relieve stress by expressing negative feelings and desires. By eliminating physical and psychological tensions, emotional stability was experienced, and it seemed to improve the ability to cope with stress by their cognitive insights. Also, through creativity of the artwork obtained from art activities, the depressed people can feel the sense of accomplishment and have the confidence. Therefore, it seems to have an influence in improving the self-esteem by forming the hopeful future plan and the positive self.
