In this thesis, an autonomous cart operating system is proposed, which is able to track the user who has remote controller. The cart tracks the user within the designated self-driving area. When the user is positioned outside the possible self-driving area, the nearest point within the self-driving area is used as the target destination. The driving algorithm of the cart consists of three different algorithms. Firstly, the ray-intersection method which is one of the point in polygon algorithms is implemented, which is used to distinguish whether the cart is located within or outside of the possible self-driving area. Secondly, developed and implemented is a tracking algorithm which generates the driving vector. The driving vector is used for controlling the direction and distance of the cart toward the user. The location and heading of the cart, and location of the user are measured using a magnetometer, and a GPS in the cart and another GPS in the remote controller. Thirdly, developed and implemented is a target destination generator when the user is located outside the self-driving area. In this case, the algorithm uses the intersection of the line from the cart to the user and the boundary of the self-driving area. For the cart tracking system, several sensors are used: a GPS, a low-cost IMU, and a magnetometer for cart positioning and direction estimation, two hall sensors for speed estimation of driving wheels, two ultrasonic sensor for obstacle detection, and another GPS for the positioning of the user. The algorithms are implemented using an embedded MCU LPC1768. The autonomous cart uses the two directly driven BLDC motors, which are mounted at the rear sides of the cart, to control the driving speed and direction. There are two auxiliary wheels at the front sides of the cart, which is used to share the load and keep the balance. The direction is controlled by giving different speed commands to the two BLDC motors. The PID control algorithms are used for the control of speed and direction of the cart. The basic operation of the proposed algorithms are verified through several experiments: speed and direction control, obstacle detection using ultrasonic sensors. The PID gains are adjusted in the course of these experiments. The final performance test were done through real tracking experiments using a prototype cart, which demonstrated that the proposed system can be utilized as an autonomous tracking system in real fields.
