The purpose of this study was to develop a creative problem solving (CPS) model-based young children's mathematics education program based on daily life-related mathematical situations and then apply it to five years old children, thus examining its effects. For this, research was carried out to develop the program and then the application effect of the program was examined. Study questions were established as follows:
1. ‘How to compose a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program?’ 1-1. ‘How to establish the aim and goal of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program?’ 1-2. ‘How to compose the educational contents of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program?’ 1-3. ‘How to compose the teaching/learning method of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program?’
1-4. ‘How to evaluate a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program?’
2. ‘What is the effect of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program?’ 2-1. ‘What is the effect of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program on young children's mathematical conception understanding?’ 2-2. ‘What is the effect of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program on young children's mathematical attitude?’ 2-3. ‘What is the effect of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program on young children's creative problem solving ability?’ 2-4. ‘What is the effect of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program on young children's creativity?’
The above study questions were examined according to following procedures: Regarding study question 1, a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program was developed. For this, many relevant literature to the CPS model in mathematics curricula and research papers were analyzed and interviews with teachers were carried out, thus examining teacher’s perception and actual status of mathematics education and demand of program development. Based on the results of literature analysis and demand examination, the aim and goal, educational contents, teaching/learning method and evaluation method of the program were decided. And then a concrete draft proposal of the program was worked out and a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program was developed after modifying/supplementing problems via consulting with experts. The aim of a CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program was to make young children take interest in mathematical situations of daily life and then learn the knowledge to solve mathematical problems creatively. Its specified goals were ‘to increase young children’s understanding of mathematical conception’, ‘to cultivate young children’s application ability of mathematical process skills to solving mathematical problems’, ‘to make young children take interest in mathematical problems of daily life and then cultivate positive problem-solving attitudes’, and ‘to make young children utilize a variety of thinking techniques and then cultivate the creative problem solving ability of mathematical problems.’ The educational contents of the program consisted of ‘mathematical conception’, ‘mathematical process skill’ and ‘mathematical attitude’ in the area of mathematics’ and ‘cognitive element’, ‘disposition element’ and ‘motive element’ in the area of creativity. The teaching/learning method of the program consisted of ‘the principle of teaching/learning’, ‘the process of teaching/learning’, ‘teaching strategies’, ‘teacher’s roles’ and ‘teaching materials.’ The principle of teaching/learning consisted of ‘the principle of life-centered’, ‘the principle of integration’, ‘the principle of play-centered’, ‘the principle of problem solving’, ‘the principle of diversity’ and ‘the principle of openness.’ The process of teaching/learning consisted of such three steps as ‘to perceive mathematical situations’, ‘to work out ideas and solutions’ and ‘to solve mathematical problems’, and every step had specified processes. The strategy of teaching consisted of ‘to encourage divergent thinking’, ‘to encourage convergent thinking’, ‘to encourage discussion’, ‘to encourage diverse symbolizations’, ‘to provide the opportunity of inference’ and ‘to provide the opportunity of sharing.’ The role of teachers consisted of ‘the provider of new perspectives’, ‘the promoter of creative problem solving thinking’, ‘the helper of creative solving of mathematical problem situations’, ‘the reviewer of ideas’ and ‘the mediator of interaction for sharing.’ The teaching materials consisted of ‘the storytelling materials related to diverse mathematical problem situations’, ‘the recording board of ideas and idea evaluation’, ‘the action journal of idea practice plan’, ‘various real objects and photographic materials related to the storytelling of mathematical problem situations’, ‘the measuring tool of nonstandard units and standard units’ and ‘a variety of artistic expression materials and tools.’ The evaluation of the program was carried out through informal evaluation and formal evaluation. The informal evaluation evaluated young children’s changes through ‘the analysis of level of understanding based on children’s presentation carried out in the process of sharing of actions and evaluation’, ‘the analysis of data on young children’s action in the process of action’ and ‘the analysis of photos and moving images.’ The formal evaluation evaluated young children’s understanding of mathematical conception, mathematical attitude, creative problem solving ability, and level of creativity before/after applying the program, using the test tool of creativity level. Regarding study question 2, an experiment was carried out to find out the application effect of the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program with 36 children of five years old at two child-care centers in Daejeon City (experiment group, n=18; control group, n=18) during a period of 12 weeks from April 5 to June 30, 2017. In order to verify the effect of the program, pre- and post-test of mathematical conception understanding, mathematical attitude, creative problem solving ability and creativity were carried out. And then based on collected data, ANCOVA was carried out to verify group difference. The application effects of the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program are as follows: First, children in the experiment group who took part in the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program presented higher statistically significant improvement in the score of mathematical conception understanding than children in the control group did. Regarding such all the sub-variables of mathematical conception understanding as algebra, number & operation, geometry and measurement, children in the experiment group presented higher significant improvement than children in the control group did. Therefore, the program in this study had positive effects on the increase of young children’s mathematical conception understanding. Second, children in the experiment group who took part in the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program presented higher statistically significant improvement in the score of mathematical attitude than children in the control group did. Regarding such all the sub-variables of mathematical attitude as interest in mathematics, patience in mathematics and competence in mathematics, children in the experiment group presented higher significant improvement than children in the control group did. Therefore, the program in this study had positive effects on the increase of young children’s mathematical attitude. Third, children in the experiment group who took part in the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program presented higher statistically significant improvement in the score of creative problem solving ability than children in the control group did. Regarding such all the sub-variables of creative problem solving ability as problem understanding, idea creation and action plan, children in the experiment group presented higher significant improvement than children in the control group did. Therefore, the program in this study had positive effects on the increase of young children’s creative problem solving ability. Fourth, children in the experiment group who took part in the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program presented higher statistically significant improvement in the score of creativity than children in the control group did. Regarding such sub-variables of creativity as fluency and originality, children in the experiment group presented higher significant improvement than children in the control group did. However, in such sub-variables of creativity as flexibility and imagination, there was no group difference. But regarding the average score of flexibility and imagination before/after the experiment, the average score of the experiment group was higher than that of the control group. In this vein, the program seemed to have effects on flexibility and imagination as well. Therefore, the program in this study had positive effects on the increase of young children’s creativity. In conclusion, the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program had positive effects on the mathematical conception understanding, mathematical attitude, creative problem solving attitude and creativity of children of five years old. This finding seems to present the fact that the CPS model-based young children's mathematics education program developed in this study is appropriate for applying to the early childhood education of five years old children as a useful education program which has differentiated values from the conventional mathematics education programs.
