This study aims to propose learning contents for education on future tense in Korean language education. Korean native speakers and Korean language learners were surveyed to elucidate the actual patterns of future tense use by each group. Based on the survey findings, the problems of future tense education in Korean language education were identified and contents for future tense education were selected as a part of Korean language education. Chapter II reexamines and discusses the functions and forms of the Korean future tense from the standpoint of Korean language education. Based on the theory of onomasiological approach and functionalism, this study classified the functions of future tense into ‘expressing plans’, ‘expressing one’s will’, ‘inferring the future’ and ‘expressing a schedule’ Beyond that, not only ‘-겠-’, ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ but also ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ-’, ‘-았/었-’ were selected as the forms of Korean future tense. Chapter III describes characteristic phenomena observed in the use of future tense among Korean language learners. The survey results reveal three characteristic aspects of the use of future tense by Korean language learners in comparison to Korean native speakers. First, Korean language learners tend to avoid the use of future tense, and this pattern is more conspicuous among learners who are less proficient in Korean language. Second, the patterns of future tense use was concentrated in the single form ‘-겠-’ among Korean language learners. Third, learners who had lived in Korea for a long time demonstrated a pattern of future tense use similar to that of Korean native speakers, and it is statistically significant. Chapter IV describes the pattern of future tense use among Korean native speakers. Korean native speakers employ a diversity of forms to express the future tense according to the function and the context. For ‘expressing plans’, ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ and ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ-’ were mainly used, depending on the probability of realizing the event. In ‘expressing will’, ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ and ‘-겠-’ are commonly used: ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ is used in ordinary situations; ‘-겠-’ is frequently employed in formal situations in order to express respect; ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ-’ is also allowed when expressing a very strong will. For ‘inferring the future,’ ‘-(으)ㄹ 것 같-’ is mainly used for a weak inference and ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ for a strong inference. In addition, for strong inference, ‘-겠-’ was frequently chosen when the inference was based on the ‘presence.’ In the case of an extremely strong inference, ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ-’ was also used. For a strong inference about a negative situation, ‘-았/었-’ was idiomatically used at times. Finally, for ‘expressing schedule’, ‘-겠-’ and ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ- ’ were used in discourse such as weather forecasts or public announcements. In ordinary situations, ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ-’ and ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ were the only forms used. Based on the findings of this study, the latter half of Chapter IV presents three propositions concerning Korean future tense education, the contents of this education, and a syllabus for each learning stage: First, in the Korean future tense, the form of the future tense is chosen in accordance with the function and the context. Therefore, a function-focused approach is required. Furthermore, the function of ‘expressing a schedule’ is not treated with much importance in the current curriculum, but this should also be included in the learning contents of future tense. Second, ‘-(으)ㄹ 것이-’ should be presented as the basic form of Korean future tense in place of ‘-겠-’. Third, ‘null form/-(느)ㄴ-’ and ‘-았/었-’ should also be suggested as forms that express the Korean future tense based on the onomasiological approach. This study has focused on the education of Korean future tense that has have not been investigated in depth in existing studies, even though it has raised a considerable number of questions and issues in Korean language classrooms. This study has significance in that it empirically demonstrates the patterns of future tense use by Korean native speakers and Korean language learners through a survey and suggests directions and concrete leaning contents for Korean future tense education based on the above findings.
