Variables associated with Depression among University Students : Focused on Sociodemographic, Parental, and Personal Variables원문보기

Depressive disorders have the highest rate of incidence among 20 to 24year old youths, with university student Depression being the most serious problem. However, studies that have synthetically examined the variables affecting this depression are scarce. This study examined the influence of university student sociodemographic, parental, and personal variables on depression and looked at how levels of university student depression vary depending on these gender and parental variables. The study results were collected from a total of 334 university students enrolled in four different universities throughout Busan. The research packet included a depression scale (CES-D), a parent attachment scale (IPPA), a parent rearing style (PBI), an ego-resilience scale (ER), and a self-esteem (RSES). Data were used to perform hierarchical regression analysis, multiple regression analysis, as well as a two-way ANOVA and independent t-test all using an SPSS 23.0 program. The main results of this study were as follows: First, the hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the most influential model was the model of personal variables. Self-esteem among personal variables was the most influential factor in the depression of university students. More specifically, the higher the level of self-esteem, the lower the level of depression. Second, the two variables that most significantly affected depression among university students were self-esteem among personal variables and father attachment among parental variables. In terms of the level of university student depression: the higher the level of self-esteem and attachment to the father, the lower the level of depression. Third, there were significant differences between gender and attachment to the father in depression. The ‘low group’ of attachment to the father had the highest level of depression in both genders. The ‘high group’ of attachment to the father had significantly lower depression than both the ‘middle’ and ‘low groups’. However, females in the ‘high’ and ‘middle’ group of attachment to the father had higher depression rates than males. For males, the ‘low group’ of attachment to the father had higher depression rates. There were no significant differences in depression levels between genders by maternal attachment levels, and between genders by parental rearing style levels. Forth, the ego-resilience and self-esteem of male students were significantly higher than those of female students. In conclusion, this study showed that attachment to a father and self-esteem are the most significant predicting factors causing university student depression. The results of these findings have implications for future research, program improvements, and education to improve paternal relationships. Also, the results of this study will provide a basic resource for the prevention and treatment of university student depression by strengthening self-esteem.
