The educational direction of the current South Korean society in 2017 is moving towards student-centered education. The direction is also at the center of the 2015 Educational Curriculum Revision that will be implemented after 2018 in middle schools and high schools. The revised curriculum states “Revitalize various student-participatory classes in accordance with the nature of the subject to foster self-directed learning abilities and to provide the experience of pleasure in learning.” As such, the revised educational curriculum clearly points the direction of change in education that is becoming more student-centered. Following such trend in education, the Flipped Learning and Havruta approaches have been receiving great attention as student-centered pedagogical methods. Flipped Learning is a new approach to the “education structure”by moving the direct teaching by the instructor to the private space of learning such as the students’home and turning the classroom into a space for collaborative activities or Project-Based Learning(PBL). The Havruta approach is a “learning method”based on a traditional pedagogical method of the Jewish people in which the learning occurs through a process of two or more students asking each other questions, explaining in their own language, and discussing the issue posed on the question. The present study constructed a middle school janggu class by applying the student-centered educational methods of Flipped Learning and Havruta. The first distinct feature is that it enables the dynamic interaction between teachers and students in the classroom. Through the Flipped Learning, the student learns the core contents of concepts at home before coming to school; therefore, the role of the teacher evolves into that of a learning assistant, and teachers are able to focus on answering questions and communicating with the students and providing help right when the students need them. Through this education process, dynamic interactions between teachers and students occur, that was difficult in a lecture-based classroom. The second distinct feature is that students are able to produce dynamic interaction among each other through Havruta. Using Havruta, two students become a group to ask and explain their answers to each other, and learn through the discussion process. This process is premised on the endless communication between the two people in the group, and therefore it creates dynamic interactions between the students. By combining the two features, the classroom construction of the present study allows for practical and meaningful learning for individuals to occur. Furthermore, the class was designed in order to encourage students to enjoy the process of learning janggu through the dynamic interactions between teachers and students-vertical relationship as well as among students with one another-horizontal relationship. Lesson plans based on these aspects were proposed. The lesson plans consisted of three stages. The first stage was a time to learn the basic concepts of janggu, learning about the historical and cultural context of janggu that began in the Goryeo dynasty and continues today and also learning about the basic posture and technique for playing the instrument. The second stage was the practice of the basic form of the danmori rhythm through the repertoire of “Onghyeya” and playing the rhythm using janggu to another person to the singing of the music by that person. The activity was designed not simply to sing and to play the janggu thus students would have to explain the danmori rhythm to each other and review the basic posture and techniques therefore learning can occur through the process of talking to each other. Such interactive activities are designed with the intention of producing a sense of enjoyment and pleasure of learning the janggu in the students. The third stage is a small concert based on the class contents of the first two stages, in which each group performs what they have practiced. In each stage, lesson plans for the Flipped Learning and lesson plans for in-class sessions were designed, resulting in a total of six lesson plans. Janggu is applied for a variety of purposes—from traditional music to contemporary creative music. Especially in repertoires of folk songs such as “Onghyeya,” janggu is used as the central instrument to boost the excitement in the music. Such particularities of the song make it appropriate for music lessons for the first year of middle school thus students can express these musical aspects by playing the instrument themselves. However, the reality of education is that middle school music teachers lack the practical skills of playing Korean traditional instruments as well as their self-confidence. As such, teachers themselves are burdened by having to teach janggu. The present study hopes to decrease such burdens and to provide practical help in the classrooms therefore students can enjoy learning about and playing the janggu.
