Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and perovskite solar cell (PSC) have attracted many researchers as alternatives to the silicon solar cell due to low cost and high efficiency. A DSSC is sandwich type consisting of two transparent conductive oxide (TCO) glasses such as fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) which are working electrode and counter electrode respectively. The working electrode consists of a hole blocking layer, mesoporous metal oxide layer, and photosensitizer (dye). In the counter electrode, Pt catalyst particles are deposited on the TCO glass. An organic liquid electrolyte is injected in between the working electrode and the counter electrode. A PSC is generally composed of TCO, electron transporting layer (ETL), perovskite, hole transporting layer (HTL), and metal electrode. PSC has three types of structures which are classified by the position of ETL and HTL in the devices or by the form of ETL films: mesoscopic structure, standard planar structure, and inverted planar structure. Among these structures, mesoscopic structure, where mesoporous metal oxide is used as ETL, is the most stable and presents the highest performance. For both DSSC and mesoscopic PSC, mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is composed of nanoparticles, is mostly used as the ETL due to exceptional capability of electron transport. When the absorbing material (dye or perovskite) absorbs light, electron in the absorbing material is excited and extracted by the mesoporous TiO2. And then, the electron is transported by the mesoporous TiO2. Therefore, the roles of mesoporous TiO2 as ETL in the devices are very important to determine the device performance. Hence, the modification of mesoporous TiO2 is essential for the high-efficiency solar cells. In this thesis, we report the modification method of mesoporous TiO2 by applying the innovative annealing process. State-of-the-art mesoporous TiO2 films for these solar cells are fabricated by annealing TiO2 paste-coated fluorine-doped tin oxide glass in a box furnace at 500 °C for ≈30 min. Here, the use of a nontraditional reactor, i.e., flame, is reported for the high throughput and ultrafast annealing of TiO2 paste (≈1 min). This flame-annealing method, compared to conventional furnace annealing, exhibits three distinct benefits. First, flame removes polymeric binders in the initial TiO2 paste more completely because of its high temperature (≈1000 °C). Second, flame induces strong interconnections between TiO2 nanoparticles without affecting the underlying transparent conducting oxide substrate. Third, the flame-induced carbothermic reduction on the TiO2 surface facilitates charge injection from the dye/perovskite to TiO2. Consequently, when the flame-annealed mesoporous TiO2 film is used to fabricate DSSCs and PSCs, both exhibit enhanced charge transport and higher power conversion efficiencies than those fabricated using furnace-annealed TiO2 films. Finally, when the ultrafast flame-annealing method is combined with a fast dye-coating method to fabricate DSSC devices, its total fabrication time is reduced from over 3 h to ≈10 min.
