The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of positive psychology based group art therapy on ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of university students. The specific problems were as follows: first, what effect does positive psychology based group art therapy have on ego-identity of university students? Second, what effect does positive psychology based group art therapy have on interpersonal relationship of university students? Third, how does ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of university students change during positive psychology based group art therapy on The subjects of this study were college students attending university in Seoul or other regions in South Korea, aged between 20 and 29. To the students who showed interest in the study based on an advertisement on the school’s message boards and social media posts, I explained the purpose and contents of the program and six students who agreed to participate in the study were assigned to the experimental group and another six to the control group. To the experimental group, a positive psychology program based group art therapy on was provided twice a week, 90 minutes per session, in a total of 12 sessions, while no program was provided to the control group. In this study, the Korean ego-identity scale developed and modified by Park (2003) and relationship change scale translated by Moon (1980) and modified by Lee (2005) were used. The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 18.0 and, prior to the program, Mann-Whitney U test was performed to verify homogeneity. And, to compare the pretest and posttest, Wilcoxon’s signed-ranks test was performed to compare the results. Lastly, to examine change in ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of college students during the group art therapy program, we analyzed changes in the individuals. The results were as follows: First, positive psychology based group art therapy on ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of university students(z=-2.20, p<.05). Among sub-factors of ego-identity, self-accepting initiative showed significant difference, while autonomy, goal orientation, future certainty, and intimacy did not show significant difference but the average scores increased, indicating positive change. Second, positive psychology based group art therapy on ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of university students(z=-2.20, p<.05). Among the sub-factors of interpersonal relationship, satisfaction, emotional understanding, communication, and openness showed significant difference. Third, positive psychology based group art therapy on had effect on improving ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of university students during the program. The students, who were not used to reflecting on themselves, constantly explored and expressed themselves through art and questioned who they were and what they wanted to do. In addition, based on their common ground as college students, the subjects provided support, encouragement, and feedback to one another and shared their feelings and ideas, harmonizing their opinions and showing consideration for others in the process. The findings in this study suggest group art therapy based on positive psychology has positive effects, albeit in part, on improving ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of college students. Therefore, this study contributed to expanding research on the utility and effect of positive psychology based group art therapy on ego-identity and interpersonal relationship of university students.
