(Korean version of the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia),

Objective : Expressed emotion in family is significance for mental illness. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of family relationships on suicide risk and quality of life in schizophrenia.
Methods : A total of 68 patients with Schizophrenia in the study. Each subject was administered questionnaires regarding their sociodemographic characters, Korean version of the Subjective Well-being under Neuroleptic Treatment Scale-Short Form, Family Emotional Involvement and Criticism Scale (FEICS), Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES), Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS), Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale. The psychiatrists assessed Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Korean version of the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia and previous suicide attempt history to evaluate the psychopathology of each patient.
Results : Multiple regression analysis revealed that FEICS Perceived criticism (Beta=-0.345, β=-1.590, p=0.001), FACES (Beta=0.245, β=0.269, p=0.014) and BCIS (Beta=0.228, β=0.753, p=0.048) have an effect on quality of life. Among the scales reflecting family relationships, the total score of FACES was statistically significant differ the two group according to previous suicide attempt history(p=0.004).
Conclusion : A high level of critical criticism was associated with lower quality of life in patients with schizophrenia. Family adaptability, cohesion, insight were significantly associated with quality of life in patients with schizophrenia. Family adaptability and cohesion was low in patients with history of suicide attempt. This results suggest that it is important to focus on Expressed emotion, Family adaptability and cohesion in patients with schizophrenia.
