With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the hyper intelligence of artificial intelligence (AI) threatens the role of human beings, we are redrawing the maps of education suitable for this new industrial age while redefining human talent. At present, the world is becoming increasingly interested in "emotional intelligence," as it's considered an exclusively human ability that differentiates us from AI in our quest to adapt amid changing times. However, there is a lack of research on educational programs to improve emotional intelligence in today's universities. Therefore, a thorough overhaul of university education is necessary to enhance our emotional intelligence. In this study, we developed and applied a maker educational program based on the design thinking process. A key feature of the design thinking process is a user-focused approach to problem solving in accordance with techniques of observation and empathy. Also, the design thinking process, which emphasizes the balance between thinking processes based on reason and logic and those based on emotion and intuition, can help maximize the results of emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study was to determine the specifics of the maker education program based on design thinking processes, and to investigate the effect of such a program on the emotional intelligence of university students. For verification purposes, a sample group was selected among undergraduates in liberal arts courses at K University, Hoegi-dong, Seoul. At the time of the education program development, we used d.school's design thinking process model as well as d.school's 6 principles of K-12 design thinking education (user-oriented, radical collaboration, process-oriented, experimentation and rapid repetition, execution-oriented, visualization). We developed the program based on such design principles. We analyzed its effects on 6 classes regarding emotional intelligence after testing the sample group from September 13 to October 25 of 2017. The quantitative data for the analysis of the results were obtained through Wong & Low (2002)‘s emotional intelligence test questionnaires in the form of pre and post questionnaires, and a statistical analysis was completed using SPSS 24.0. As a result, statistically significant figures were found in the sub-elements of emotional intelligence in the areas of self-understanding, understanding of others, and emotional utilization, but not for the domain of emotional control (p<.05). Qualitative data was used for reflection, interviews, and observation logs. Analysis of the qualitative data confirmed that the maker education program based on the design thinking process positively influenced students’ emotional intelligence in the areas of self-understanding, understanding of others, and emotional application. In order to revitalize the maker education program based on the design thinking process, which focuses on improving the emotional intelligence of college students, it is essential to conduct research on a greater number of subjects, for longer periods, and with more sample groups. It is also key to develop and apply programs that employ a greater variety of subjects in the arts. In addition, as a helper, it is necessary to change the perception of the role of a teacher and to offer the necessary training to adapt their skills to new forms of education. In conclusion, this study offers research on a maker education program based on the design thinking process and verifies the areas of emotional intelligence that are influenced by such a program. Hopefully, this study can aid future developers in maker education who can use the design thinking process to improve the emotional intelligence of university students.
