The Ministry of Education has included ‘theatre’ as an elective course in the arts curriculum of the 2015 revised national curriculum so that all high school students across the country can choose ‘theatre’ courses. Textbooks have been developed accordingly and are ready for use in 2018. Compared to the importance of the curriculum, the importance of textbooks in school education is almost absolute because the use of textbooks is stipulated by law. Given the importance of textbooks in school education, and the development process, and review procedure of textbooks, the educational goals of theatre in Korean high schools can be influenced by the beliefs, values, or judgments of textbook writers or reviewers, and the identity of theatre courses will depend on textbooks even if the national curriculum clarifies the goals, direction, contents, and achievement standards of the courses. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how the achievement standards of the ‘theatre’ curriculum are reflected in the theatre textbooks authorized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government by connecting the 2015 revised curriculum with the ‘theatre’ textbooks, and to find areas for improvement.
The scope of the research is limited to the organization, chapter titles, and learning objectives and activities of the ‘theatre’ textbooks developed by three publishers, but the supplements specifically written to meet the achievement standards are included in the research. This study analyzes the previous studies, dividing them into the study on the theatre curriculum and textbooks, and the study on the curriculum of other subjects and their connection to the textbook. This study also reviews the 2015 revised national curriculum and achievement standards for theatrical education and the approval standards as well as areas to consider in compilation of the ‘theatre’ textbooks. The standards for analysis are drawn based on this review. The learning objectives are reviewed to determine whether the learning objectives of each unit could meet the achievement standards, whether there are any learning objectives that go beyond the achievement standards, and whether the learning objectives are below the achievement standards. The learning activities are divided into three parts; learning objectives, studying the content, and application, and are analyzed based on the 89 ‘analytical factors for learning activities by the achievement standards.’
The analysis shows that the organization of the three textbooks follows the ‘contents system’ of the national curriculum, and the titles of the units are either the same as those of the ‘area’ in the national curriculum, or are more specified, and no creative organization or titles are used. The titles of small units either make it hard to predict, or do not match the contents. In Cheonjae textbooks, there is no corresponding unit for the achievement standards [12Theatre04-03]. In regards to learning objectives, 72.22% of Kumseong textbooks, 90.90% of Jihaksa textbooks, and 78.95% of Cheonjae textbooks meet the national standards, while some of their learning objectives have a poor connection with the national achievement standards, as well as with the titles of units, and learning activities.
The problematic aspects of the learning objectives in small units are classified into three categories; the learning objectives that need to be integrated, the learning objectives that need to be extended to the visible aim points, and the learning objectives that need to be limited due to excessive learning materials and activities. It is confirmed that following learning activities related to ‘analytical factors for learning activities by the achievement standards’ are missing by each organization: 5 activities in Kumseong, 3 activities in Jihaksa, and 20 activities in Cheonjae. In addition, there are problems such as inaccurate information, incorrect postscripts, wrong illustrations, conflicts in terminologies or contents with related subjects, composition of learning activities lacking in sequence, and excessive amount of volume. Therefore, it is necessary to have a new understanding of the ‘character’ and ‘goal’ of the 2015 revised national ‘theatre’ curriculum, to set the goals of the textbooks accordingly, and to present clear and visible goals to the students by analyzing the achievement standard. Also, it is necessary to select and organize learning contents and activities appropriate in level and scope. In this process, it is necessary to secure the sequence between the phased learning activities without the increase in the amount of learning. Further research and academic attention are needed to solve problems such as using different terminologies for the same concepts in textbooks, or conceptualizing the same terminologies differently.
As discussed above, it is confirmed that each textbook has various types of problems. These problems are related to different points of views of theatre and theatre courses among the textbook writers and curriculum developers, and the different interpretations of the national curriculum. Therefore, it is necessary for textbook writers and curriculum developers to communicate and interact with each other, and it will be necessary for those within the field to have an open discussion about the identity of theatre. In addition, the standardization of theatrical terminology should be given precedence in order to stabilize the ‘theatre’ course and to develop theatrical education.
