The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of recycled object-based art play activity on children’s creativity. To address the goal, this author has formulated study questions as follows:
Study question: Is recycled object-based art play activity effective in enhancing children’s creativity (fluency, originality, openness, sensitivity)?
To solve these study questions, this author selected two classes of five-year-olds (72- to 74-month-olds) attending Busan B Kindergarten. 19 children were assigned to an experimental group doing the recycled object-based art play activity, and 19 children were arranged in the control group not involved in it. According to the results of the creativity pre-test, the experimental group and control group did not indicate significant mean difference, so they were found to be homogenous. For this research, the recycled object-based art play activity was done for five weeks from July 18th until August 24th, 2017 by the experimental group, twice a week (with total 10 sessions). The control group was operated by the previous after-school activity plan. As a test tool, this author used Korean Figural Creativity Test for Young Children: KFCTYC developed by Jeon Gyeong-won (2002). The findings of this study can be summed up as below: First, the recycled object-based art play activity influences children’s creativity as follows. According to the results of conducting the recycled object-based art play activity, the experimental group’s children gained the total mean score in creativity as M=237.13 (SD=30.81), and the control group’s received it as M=212.34 (SD=15.99), which was found to be statistically significant. Second, the recycled object-based art play activity influences creativity’s subareas in the following ways. According to the results of conducting the recycled object-based art play activity, fluency showed statistically significant difference between the pre-test (M=58.10) and post-test (M=68.20), so it was improved significantly. Originality indicated statistically significant difference between the pre-test (M=49.81) and post-test (M=62.99), so originality was enhanced significantly. Openness did not show statistically significant difference between the pre-test (M=53.58) and post-test (M=51.82) in the experimental group. Sensitivity did not indicate statistically significant difference between the pre-test (M=46.54) and post-test (M=54.13). It implies that recycled object-based art play activity is effective in enhancing children’s creativity.
