Effects of patients’ experiences of negative emotions and self-evaluation on doctor-patient communications원문보기

Purpose: This study aims to introduce two different studies, which examine recently focused issues related to doctor-patient communications. The first study is to examine patients' experiences of negative emotions during auscultation and to find out differences according to gender and obesity. The second study is to find out if obesity or personal weight perception affect Body esteem, Self-esteem and depressive symptoms and whether gender moderates the effects. Methods: The first study’s questionnaire consists of items asking the respondents whether they have experienced negative emotions during a stethoscope examination, and what caused the emotions. In the second study’s questionnaire BMI(Body Mass Index) was calculated, and personal weight perception, scales of Body esteem, Self-esteem scale and depressive symptoms were asked. Results: In the first study, More than half of the respondents reported they have experienced negative emotions during auscultation, and the most frequently mentioned reason was their discomfort of exposing their body. For those with no negative emotion, said that they believed that the auscultation was necessary. Many of them said that their doctor had explained well the purpose of using a stethoscope as the reason. Women and those who experienced negative emotion preferred the same gender of a doctor for auscultation. In addition, obese people experienced negative emotion more than normal weight people. In the second study, obesity had no significant effects on Body esteem, Self-esteem and depressive symptoms and there were no gender differences. Body esteem scores according to weight perception were different significantly, which persons who perceive themselves as overweight more likely to have low Body esteem than those who perceive themselves as normal or underweight. This result corresponded to women, while men who perceive themselves as underweight had low Body esteem. Conclusions: The results show that physicians need to understand that using auscultation could cause patients discomfort and negative emotions. To prevent patients from feeling unnecessary discomfort and to enhance doctor-patient relationship, physicians need to learn to become a competent communicator. Also regarding the second study, future studies are suggested regarding gender differences on body evaluation and potential factors moderating obesity and psychological variables in order to give insigths regarding doctor-patient relationships.
