This research uses a qualitative research method of grounded theory in comparing the fandom formation and activities for Korean and Chinese idol groups among Chinese audiences. To this end, it conducted interviews and online surveys of 31 fan forum members for a Chinese idol group TFBOYS and 88 fan forum members for a Korean idol group BTS. It analyzes the data using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding process. Whereas the fans of TFBOYS are 'introduced' to the group through the media, respondents who are interested in Korea become fans of BTS through information from other idols they like or other K-pop fans. Contextual condition of a central phenomenon called ‘Ipdukhagi (becoming active fans)’ to TFBOYS included national pride and personal attraction of Chinese idols, and to BTS it included musical attraction and cultural attraction towards Korea. Intervening condition included not only surplus of time and money, but also self-control and direct communication from celebrities. They create different fandom results through action/interaction strategies such as ability to participate, spending time, being immersed in emotion, devotion, and selection. TFBOYS fans' consequences included energy, comradeship, and sense of insufficiency, while BTS fans' consequences included longing for musical freedom and hope for liberal criticism that demonstrate the differences between Korean and Chinese idol cultures. Although the two idol groups' fandom share certain similarities, they also reflect social and cultural differences and thus can be categorized as difference types. Idol culture and cultural industries in China are yet relatively unexperienced and their fandom activities show various limitations, but the results of this research show that its cultural industry is rapidly developing and bringing national pride and confidence in their culture among Chinese audiences.
