The purpose of this study was to survey the effect of social support on depression and anxiety in HIV/AIDS patients. Under the approval of the people in charge of institution in N medical center, a total of 80 HIV/AIDS patients receiving medical consultations in said institution responded to the survey after listening to the explanation of the objective of this study as well as providing written consent for the study. The findings of this study are as follows. Regarding the correlation within social support, depression and anxiety among the HIV/AIDS patients, the social support was lower when the degree of depression was higher, and the social support was lower when the degree of anxiety was higher. Looking into the influence factors affecting the depression and anxiety in HIV/AIDS patients, sex, age, education level, economic level, job status, living conditions, infection period, status of comorbidity, status of taking medication except HIV medication, status of taking depression and anxiety medication explain 43.1%(F=4.69, p<0.001) of depression when the factor of social support was added and 44.7%(F=5.0, p<0.001) of anxiety when the factor of social support was added. Through this analysis, the investigator found the social support was very important factor for HIV/AIDS patients, who usually have lower the degree of depression and anxiety. Especially, education programs for family and friends & co-worker supporters should be developed. Education on disease and related psychological and emotional changes, communication skills and problem should be provided to family and friends & co-worker supporters who are most reliable supporters for HIV/AIDS patients. In the meantime, medical support(health care provider such as doctor, counselling nurse) as well as family(or emotional/sexual partners) support, friends & co-worker support must be developed in order to improve the degree of depression and anxiety. In conclusion, it is important to prepare various social support system in order to improve the degree of depression and anxiety related to adherence for HIV/AIDS patients.
