In this paper, we describe an algorithm for estimating the position of the scattering center of a target using a transmitted signal via a SFCW(Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave) radar based on a HRRP(high resolution range profile). Analysis of HRRP information gives characteristics of target’s shape, that can be used to identify the target in combination with a given database. Hence, in order to correctly identify the target, the high range resolution is required, which can be obtained using a wide bandwidth signal. In the general pulse radar system, a narrow pulse signal should be generated to obtain a wide bandwidth. In this case, some hardware problems occur, that can be solved by frequency modulation, such as FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) or SFCW radar. Since the HRRP has only one-dimensional distance information, two or more HRRP information sets obtained from other angles are required to estimate the two-dimensional scattering point. The distance information obtained from the SFCW radar is used to estimate the position of the scattering point through the projection matrix. We discuss the problem that occurs when estimating the locations of scattering points and then give a method of how to solve them. In order to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, we first measure the HRRP in the radar system with a center frequency of 24 GHz and a bandwidth of 1.5 GHz, and then compare with the results of electromagnetic wave analysis program.
