The purpose of this research is to develop an experiential nature education program which is specialized for urban forest parks. Yeongheung Park in Suwon is the site of this research, which is expected to hold nature experience programs including an urban arboretum. The water system, walkways, the physicochemical characteristics of soil, the structure of actual vegetation and plants community, the distribution of large trees, the appearance of wild birds, and the inhabitation of amphibians, reptiles and insects in the research site were investigated to identify the characteristics of the sites. Furthermore, the resource system for experiential nature education was established to develop potential resources of the site. The goal and direction of the experiential nature education program were set by reflecting the implications acquired by studying urban forest experience education of Japan. After selecting a theme that can show the site’s characteristics well and arranging resources, an experiential nature education program was suggested. The results of this research can be summarized as follows: First, the fundamental environment of water system, walkways and soil characteristics were investigated and analyzed. Yeongheung Park is surrounded by mountain ridges in U shape, and the valley is developed at the center. Most of the valley area is terraced paddy fields where the water system is formed to provide enough water to cultivate the fields. The majority of sunny places are covered with tombs. The walkways are along the site ridge, and the slope is gradual. Being affected by air pollution from the city and acid rain, soil was considered to affect growth of plants. As the research site is a forest with abundant water and a gentle slope, the soil has the characteristics of urban forests significantly affected by the urban environment. Second, the plant ecology was studied and analyzed. In the forest of Yeongheung Park, Robinia pseudoacacia community is the most widely distributed. There is Quercus aliena community in the valley, Pinus densiflora community and Pinus rigida community in the ridge, and Quercus acutissima community in the slope area. It was revealed that the site had Pinus densiflora community in the ridge and a Quercus aliena colony in both the slope and the valley area in the past. Like most urban forests in Korea, the forest in Yeongheung Park went through forest degradation by the Korean War and forest regeneration by the nation-wide campaign of forest greening since the 1970s and secondary succession until forming the current vegetation. The Robinia pseudoacacia community is declining and transitioning to the Quercus acutissima community and the Quercus aliena community. The potential natural vegetation of the site is assumed to be the Quercus aliena community, and several tree species strong against urban environments such as air pollution and acid soil have grown like in other urban forests. Third, animal ecology was studied and analyzed. The investigation on wild birds, insects and amphibians revealed that the wild animals found in the park were species inside the forest, in the edge of the forest, waterside, wetland, grassland and urbanized species; in the rice paddy wetland, in particular, legally protected species and endangered species appeared. The result shows the site is providing various types of habitats such as forest, rice paddy, wetland, farmland, grassland and orchard based on large tree colonies and rich water system. Fourth, the resource system for nature education was established, and potential resources were developed. The resource system was developed by identifying the characteristics of the research site, establishing standards for choosing proper resources according to the characteristics, and drawing resources. 10 items were selected for the site characteristics: farmland; abundant water; walkways with slow slope; soil acidification and barrenness due to urban effects; development and disturbance; vegetation of pine trees and oaks forests in the past; deforestation, competition and succession of afforested second-growth forest; potential vegetation of Quercus aliena; urbanized species of trees; and inhabitation of various wild animals. As for the standards for selecting resources, the following 5 criteria were developed: reflecting the characteristics of the site; being located in accessible location; resources stimulating feelings and emotions; space that can be used for learning, experiencing and relaxing; focusing on locations related to resources. Thirty-one potential resources were selected and made into a map. The potential resources include arbor such as Castanea crenata, Quercus dentate and Quercus acutissima; arborescent such as Corylus heterophylla and Lindera obtusiloba; shrubs such as Rosa multiflora and Spiraea prunifolia; herbaceous plants such as Phytolacca americanae; large pole such as Quercus aliena and pine trees; dead trees such as Robinia pseudoacacia; vegetarion colony such as Robinia pseudoacacia and Quercus aliena; and wild birds, sound of animals, feeding traces, microclimate, sunlight, bare ground and open ground, unique landscape, etc. Fifth, by studying the case of urban forest experienceeducation in Japan, implications were developed, which was reflected in setting the goal and theme of the program according to the site’s characteristics. The implications of the Japanese case were establishing landscape points when drawing resources, developing resources stimulating feelings and emotions, considering microclimate and cultural resources, things to consider activity space and wild animal observation space, and interest, education and continuity of programs. The goal of the program is to help understand components of the ecosystem of the forest in Yeongheung Park and to be familiar with them, to understand the natural characteristics of the park as an urban forest, and to recognize the relationship among oneself, local community and the society. Relating to this, the theme was set as ‘the complicated ecosystem of the forest in Yeongheung Park is closely related to people and changing by affecting each other.’ Lastly, the details of the program were established. The traffic path of the program was determined using the existing walkways, and an overview was developed according to 5 sub-themes in order of exposition-complication-crisis- climax-resolution. The program was divided into A and B based on the direction of move. The sub-themes of program A include introduction to the urban forest of Yeongheung Park and various members in the forest of Yeongheung Park, while program B is proceeded in order of the competition and changes in the forest of Yeongheung Park, the development of the forest of Yeongheung Park, and the future of the forest of Yeongheung Park. The potential resources were arranged, according to the overview and detailed programs were developed. The detailed programs of program A include feeling the forest, viewing the city and the forest, making home for wild animals, soil ecosystem, explanation about herb ecology and meditation. Program B consists of observing fallen trees, foreign plants disturbing the ecosystem, potential vegetation in Yeongheung Park, explanation about succession, walking on bare feet, explanation about Black locust and Pinus rigida, observation of wild flowers, laying down on grass, explanation about competition in the forest, playing with dead trees, observation of wild animals, meditation, explanation about pine tree and oak tree culture and ecological experience of Quercus aliena.
