BADS(Korean version of the BADS: K-BADS)를 타당화하고자 하였다.

Behavioral activation is well-known to be one of the evidence-based treatments for depressive disorders as approved by the American Psychological Association. Behavioral activation treatment has been applied to not only depressed patients but also those with other mental disorders and has recently been in the spotlight since its cost-effectiveness is high. Kanter, Mulick, Bush, Berlin, and Martell(2006) developed the Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale(BADS) by reflecting the results of several recent studies on behavioral activation and improving the limitations of the existing measurement tools. The BADS is a 25-item self-report questionnaire based on the manual of behavioral activation treatment and has been proved to be a valid measurement tool for the level of behavioral activation after treatment. This thesis consists of three studies designed to validate the Korean version of the BADS(K-BADS) among three samples of undergraduate students in order to contribute to the study and practical application of behavioral activation treatment in Korea. Study 1 examined the factor structure of the K-BADS using exploratory factor analysis(EFA) on the data collected from Korean undergraduate students(n = 256) and evaluated its internal consistency and corrected item-total correlations. A subsample of fifty participants completed the K-BADS once again after 4 weeks to examine its test-retest reliability. EFA of the K-BADS revealed a four-factor solution - activation, avoidance/rumination, work/school impairment, and social impairment, consistent with the original version the BADS. However, five items showed cross-loadings and two items loaded on the other factors, compared with the original BADS. The K-BADS showed high internal consistency, corrected item-total correlations, and good test-retest reliability. Study 2 examined the replicability of the four-factor structure reported in Study 1, using confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) and with an independent sample of university students(n = 272). CFA indicated that the four-factor structure was replicated. The total scale of the K-BADS showed significant correlation with the severity of depressive symptoms, and work/school impairment and social impairment subscales of the K-BADS showed significant correlation with the other scale of functional impairment. Furthermore, the correlations were relatively stronger that those of the K-BADS with generalized anxiety disorder symptoms and anger disposition, respectively, providing support for convergent and discriminant validity of the BADS. The total scale of the K-BADS showed significant correlation with experiential avoidance, a mental health variable assumed to be related to behavioral activation. The correlation remained significant even after controlling for avoidance of negative events(behavioral inhibition) and cognitive-behavioral avoidance, providing support for criterion-related validity and incremental validity of the K-BADS. Study 3 examined whether the K-BADS is sensitive to assessing the effects of a behavioral activation group treatment. Twenty undergraduates both with mild or moderate level of depression and with low level of behavioral activation, as indicated by scores below one standard deviation from the mean score of the normative sample, were equally assigned to behavioral activation treatment and psychoeducation groups. All participants completed the K-BADS and other scales of depressive symptoms and functional impairment before and after treatment, and 3 weeks after the end of treatment. Participants in the behavioral activation treatment group showed significantly greater reduction in depressive symptoms and increase in behavioral activation level than those of the psychoeducation group. Improvements in functional impairment was not significantly different between two groups. Thus, the results support treatment sensitivity of the K-BADS. In conclusion, the results of this thesis suggest that the BADS is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring behavioral activation level of undergraduate students in Korea. Lastly, the utilization of the BADS in the research and clinical practice of depression as well as the limitations of the present studies were discussed.
