The purpose of this study is to analyze the development process and exchange aspects of the early ironware culture in the Far East, on the basis of which, to look into the cultural movements of the political bodies like Buyeo, Okjeo, Yìlóu(挹婁) and huì(濊), etc., which were introduced(addressed) in 『History of Three States(三國志)』Wèishū(魏書) Dongyi-jeon(東夷傳), and regional groups.
The Far East is roughly divided into 7 regional groups such as the mid-downstream region of the Nènjiāng, the mid-downstream region of the 2nd Sōnghuājiāng, the mid-stream region of the 1st Sōnghuājiāng, Sān Jiāng Píngyuán region, mid-downstream region of the Hēilóngjiāng, mid-downstream region of the Mǔdānjiāng, and Korea-China-Russia border areas, etc. from the perspective of natural geographical environment such as topography and water system, etc., and ruins distribution aspects from the Neolithic Age to the early Ironware Age.
Each regional group inherited the local style archaeological culture in the Bronze Age, and a large number of the early ironware cultures assuming a strong local color are distributed in there.
The early ironware culture in the Far East is roughly divided into the four stages according the accompanying relationship between bean-shaped earthenware, géziyāxíng(horn-shaped handle) earthenware, earthenware steamer, iron axe, iron arrowhead, and Wuzhueqian(五銖錢). First, the first period is ‘a pre-ironware period’ when ironware has not been excavated, which is chronicled between the late 10th century B.C. and the 4th century B.C.
Earthenware of geometric patterns like lightning design, etc. taken together, it is estimated that there might be exchange relations between the 1st period of Yril culture of the mid-downstream of the Hēilóngjiāng and báijīnbǎo culture at the Nènjiāng basin during the Bronze Age. The 2nd period is chronicled as the 3rd~2nd century B.C. The excavated quantity of ironware is extremely small in comparison with the excavated ruins. During this period, it is identified that there might be regional exchange relations between China’s Yanbian district and the southern area of Primorie, and between the mid-stream region of the 1st Sōnghuājiāng and the mid-downstream region of the Hēilóngjiāng.
During the 3rd period of the early ironware culture, there was the most brisk interregional exchanges, and a broad area exchange network with Pàozǐyán culture at the mid-downstream of the 2nd Sōnghuājiāng as the center, and the interregional local exchange network are identified. Through the broad area exchange network, ruins like hexaform iron axe, iron scales on a coat of armor, and bean-shaped earthenware B-class, etc. spread to the mid-downstream area of the Hēilóngjiāng. and Korea-China-Russia border areas. Through the exchange network between small areas, there was an exchange between Sān Jiāng Píngyuán region and the mid-downstream region of the Hēilóngjiāng.
During this period, earthenware with a horn-shaped handle, multistage iron arrowhead, and iron scales on a coat of armor, etc. were distributed. Lastly, during the 3rd period of the early ironware culture, this study takes it that there might be exchange relations with fènglín culture of Sān Jiāng Píngyuán, Primorie Poltse culture, and Hékǒu yícún of the mid-downstream of the Mǔdānjiāng led by the 3rd period of Poltse culture of the mid-downstream of the Hēilóngjiāng. During this period, the resident group of the mid-downstream of the Hēilóngjiāng emigrated to Primorie on a large scale.
With the application of the macroscopic concept of cultural area, it’s possible to classify the early ironware culture in the Far East into the patternless earthenware cultural area and patterned earthenware cultural area depending on existence or non-existence of earthenware patterns although such an application method doesn’t fully meet the intended cultural area classification. The former includes Paoziyan culture, dōngkāng culture, Dōngxīng culture, Hékǒu yícún(河口遺存), and Tuanjie-Kroynovka culture, etc.
The former has a strong tradition of the earthenware having a handle, along with a grinding(polishing) technique. The latter includes Hànshū culture, Hongmasan culture, Yril culture and Poltse culture, etc. Earthenware is combined with diverse patterns like an embossed band pattern. géziyāxíng pattern, bean-shaped pattern, and fingernail pattern, etc. It is postulated that the patternless earthenware cultural area has a connection with the culture of hui origin while patterned earthenware cultural area has a connection with the culture of Sukjin origin on the whole.
Buyeo’s archaeological culture is the Paoziyan culture of the mid-downstream region of the 2nd Sōnghuājiāng. As regards the origin and growth background of Buyeo, the bibliographic history judges that Buyeo was formed by the immigration group in connection with Dongmyeong myth(東明神話), but from the perspective of earthenware culture, such an interpretation doesn’t stand to reason. Buyeo’s characteristic earthenware model, or bean-shaped earthenware B-class (columnar bean-shaped earthenware)is excavated even in the mid-stream region of the 1st Sōnghuājiāng, the mid-downstream region of the Mǔdānjiāng, and Korea-China-Russia border areas, which reflects that Buyeo was expanded into the surrounding areas.
Okjeo is divided into South Okjeo and North Okjeo. South Okjeo at the whole area of Hamheung is divided into slender bronze dagger culture and the culture of Nakrang origin, and after Wiman(衛滿)’s subjugation and establishment of Four Commanderies of Han, material culture of north-west region flowed into South Okjeo extensively, but the local style earthenware steadily maintained the earthenware tradition of the previous period. North Okjeo has a high correlation with Tuanjie-Kroynovka culture which is identified at Korea-China-Russia border areas. Appearance of North Okjeo in history books is closely related with the aspect of Tuanjie-Kroynovka culture expansion into surrounding areas around 1 B.C. and the Christian time.
Through the literature analysis, Yìlóu is divided into Yìlóu during the period of the Han dynasty and Yìlóu during the period of wèijìn. The former is set as the 2nd period of Poltse culture at the mid-downstream region of the Hēilóngjiāng, and Guntuling culture of Sān Jiāng Píngyuán while the latter is set as the 3rd period of Poltse culture of the mid-downstream region of the Hēilóngjiāng, and Primorie Poltse culture, respectively through the comparison with the then situation.
Lastly, Tuanjie-Kroynovka culture spread to the central district of the Korean Peninsula, becoming an important cultural bedrock in forming zhōngdǎo-type culture. Such a fact is supported by similarity in earthenware making technique, earthenware model, and Korean floor heating system between two cultures. zhōngdǎo-type culture is deemed hui(濊) culture of the central district.
