In order to reduce global warming and environmental pollution caused by exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines or caused by emissions from consumption of conventional fossil fuels, extensive researches regarding renewable energy have been carried out showing commercialization potential of bio-fuels that could be used as an alternative to the conventional fossil fuels. Bio-diesel and bio-ethanol can be produced from a large variety of biomass-derived feedstock such as corn, soybean, and potato. However, the drawbacks of development of bio-fuels were also found showing increases in grain prices and famine issues. In this study, coffee ground oil(CGO) was produced from coffee waste through fast pyrolysis process after extracting and drying the remaining coffee beans for 24 hours. CGO has lower energy density and cetane number but higher viscosity, acidity, oxygen element and water contents compared to those of the conventional diesel fuels. To overcome such as disadvantages, the blended fuel of butanol, PEG400, and 2-EHN was added to CGO. The CGO is blended increasing 0, 10, 20, and 30% on a mass basis. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the practical feasibility of application of CGO-butanol blended fuel in the conventional diesel engine and also to characterize their consequent combustion and emission behaviors. This study is composed of following three parts. First, CGO-butanol blended fuel was studied to examine the possibility of actual application, combustion and emission characteristics in the conventional diesel engine. Comparison was performed between blended fuel contained CGO and diesel fuel. Second, driving and emission characteristics of conventional diesel tractor were investigated with the same fuel used in the first experiment, under on-road condition. Third, the compatibility of blended fuel was evaluated through the continuous operation for 12 hours in order to consider the actual operating conditions in the future, when the diesel fuel and CGO30 containing the highest mixing ratio of CGO was applied to diesel engine generator. Experimental results showed that CGO-butanol blended fuels have similar combustion stability compared to diesel and its oxygen elements contents can cause higher NOx(nitrogen oxide) emission. However, relatively higher contents of oxygen in the blended fuel led to more efficient combustion of HC(hydro carbon), so it make an impact on PM(particle matter) reduction.
