The purpose of this study is to investigate what subjects have information needs, what types of media are used to solve them, and why media are selected for middle school students living in a digital era where various types of media coexist. The contents of the study are as follows.
1) What is the daily life information requirement of middle school students? 2) What is the use of media for solving information needs of middle school students? (1) What media do you use to solve your information needs? (2) What are the reasons for selecting specific media? 3) Is there a difference in information needs according to the demographic characteristics of middle school students? In order to solve this research problem, we surveyed 413 male and female students in S middle school in Seoul to investigate their information use and information usage through media use. The results of the descriptive statistics analysis after the survey are as follows First, the top 10 ranking of 28 middle school students' requests for daily life information was the highest demand for career information, followed by family relationship, creativity consumption, friends/class/heterosexual relationship, social activities, college/university, pop culture, self image, daily routine life, and study. Second, the Internet(Portal Naver, Youtube, etc.) was selected by 5874, the most popular among the media(information sources)that solved the information needs of middle school students. Next, people(teachers, parents, friends) was selected by 5174. Finally mobile and mobile devices(including apps) were selected by 4175. Third, the reasons for choosing the media(information source) to solve the information demand are summarized as follows: 4479 people selected the most accurate, and 4294 people selected the convenience, the next ranking, the familiarity of 3518, the reliability of 3245, the newest information of 2745 persons, and the professionals of 2091. Fourth, the difference of the information demand according to the demographic characteristics is analyzed according to gender, friend/class mate/heterosexual relationship, pop culture, fashion, emotional stability, self image, repeated daily life, physical safety, products and services, creative acts, study, and sexual identity were statistically significant. In all of these items, girls showed higher demands for information than boys. There was also a difference between girls and boys in the ranking of information needs. Fifth, differences in social/moral norms, health, and school culture were statistically significant in the differences according to grade. In social/moral norms, information demands were higher in the third grade than in the first and second grades, and health was higher in the third grade than in the second grade, and school culture was higher than the third grade respectively. Sixth, the information needs of middle school students were grouped into seven self categories of Agosto and Hughes-Hassell. The category average was highest with social self (M=3.76), creative self(M=3.76), physical self (M=3.46), cognitive self (M=3.44), speculative self (M=3.43) and emotional self (M=3.42), Sexual self (M=2.87). This human-centered study is to investigate information behaviors of middle school students, to analyze information needs, to investigate media usage behavior and to identify the influencing factors. The study of these two subjects in middle school students is extremely rare and this study will be meaningful. Based on the results of the research, it could be useful for the literacy education of information services and media in school libraries.
