Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of bilateral reaching task training on balance, sit to stand, and gait abilities in patients with stroke. Methods: A total of 36 patients diagnosed with stroke were randomly divided into the experimental group (n=18) and control group (n=18). All subjects in this study received general inpatient rehabilitation program for 60 minutes per day, five times per week, for eight weeks. The experimental group received additional bilateral reaching task training in sitting for 30 minutes per day, five times per week, for eight weeks. To compare pre and post intervention, sitting balance, sit to stand, standing balance, and gait abilities were measured. Sitting balance ability was measured the reaching distance in sitting using the modified functional reach test and measured the activity of rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and soleus muscles of the hemiplegic side during reaching in sitting using surface electromyography system. Sit to stand ability was measured the center of pressure (COP) displacement and the duration during sit to stand using Good Balance System, and measured the activity of rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and soleus muscles of the hemiplegic side during sit to stand using surface electromyography system. Standing balance ability was measured COP displacement in standing using Good Balance System. Gait ability was measured the gait speed using the 10 meter walk test. A paired t-test was used to compare the differences within groups, and an independent t-test was used to compare the differences between the two groups. Results: The result of this study, sitting balance, sit to stand, standing balance, and gait abilities were significantly difference pre and post intervention (p<.05). The experimental group showed significant improvements in sitting balance and sit to stand abilities compared with the control group (p.05). Conclusion: The results show that bilateral reaching task training in sitting was beneficial for the sitting balance and sit to stand abilities in patients with stroke. Therefore, it is thought that bilateral reaching task training in sitting is a clinically valuable method of preambulation functional training that can be performed safely for stroke patients within six months.
