The purpose of this study is to investigate participation in physical activity and the status of smartphone usage of university students and to analyze the differences in the tendency of smartphone addiction and mental health according to physical activity. For this study, we conducted a survey on 301 smartphone users in their 20s who are attending universities located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do province. Data from 272 questionnaires were used for the final analysis. Data processing was performed using frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, crossover analysis, two-way MANOVA, correlation analysis, and simple regression analysis using SPSS 23.0 program. The results are as follows. First, male students and lower classmen participated more in physical activity, and a great number of female students and upper classmen were included in the smartphone addiction tendency group. Second, there were significant differences among the sub-factors of smartphone addiction tendency according to gender, such as salience, tolerance, mood modification, withdrawal, and relapse, but there was no significant difference in conflict. There was a significant difference in tolerance according to frequency of physical activity participation, but there was no significant difference according to duration of participation. Third, there were differences in all factors of smartphone addiction tendency according to grade level, and there was no significant difference according to frequency and duration of physical activity participation. Fourth, there were significant differences in all factors of mental health according to gender, frequency of participation in physical activity, and duration of participation. Fifth, according to grade level, there were significant differences in all factors of mental health. According to the frequency of physical activity participation and duration of participation, there were significant differences only in depression and anxiety. Lastly, participation of physical activity of university students with a high tendency of smartphone addiction showed significant negative effect on anxiety, attention, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, and somatization, which are sub-factors of mental health.
