This study attempted to investigate online game effects and context that gamers experience in a multiple and in-depth fashion through the mixed methods study which includes both quantitative (meta-analysis) and qualitative (in-depth interview) studies. For this, the effect sizes of positive and negative factors of online games were reviewed by target (child, adolescent, adult) for the comprehensive analysis of individual studies from January, 2000 to February, 2020 through meta-analysis. Then, differences in such effect sizes by gender, game player and game-playing time were unveiled through analysis of moderating effects. In addition, the matters which aren’t discovered in meta-analysis were examined against children, adolescents and adults through in-depth interview. Such matters are motives to play games, reasons to keep playing games, self-assessment and assessment by others on playing games and game context on both positive and effective effects that gamers experience. In terms of data collection for meta-analysis, research papers with online games as independent variables among previous studies on the effects of online games in the Republic of Korea were examined. Specifically, a total of 123 papers (43: papers on academic journals, 80: master’s and Ph.D. theses) were analyzed. From these papers were sampled 90,063 people. To examine the experience of online games by those who take playing games as a part of their lives and meaning expressed from such experience, an in-depth interview was performed against a total of 19 children, adolescents and adults. The collected data were analyzed, using Colaizzi's descriptive phenomenological method, and the results of this study were as follows: First, according to meta-analysis, in terms of the size of the positive effects of online games, ‘child’ was the highest, followed by ‘adolescent’ and ‘adult’, showing a moderate effect size. The effects were particularly large among children. In terms of the size of the negative effects of online games, on the contrary, no difference was found among children, adolescents and adults, revealing a moderate effect size. In other words, the negative effects of online games were mostly same among children, adolescents and adults. Second, the positive effects of online games revealed a difference by group (children, adolescents, adults). Among children and adolescents, online games had a positive effect on their adjustment to school life. Specifically, ‘peer relationship’ and ‘learning attitude’ revealed the greatest effect while ‘student-teacher relationship’ and ‘compliance with school rules’ showed a moderate effect. In terms of the positive effects of online games in an adolescent group, moderate effects were found in psychological (self-esteem, stress), behavioral (impulsiveness) and relational (interpersonal relationship, family relationship) factors. In an adult group, a modern influence was observed in psychological (leisure satisfaction, life satisfaction) and relational (interpersonal relationship) factors. Third, in terms of factors with large negative effects of online games, behavioral (impulsiveness, aggression/delinquency/anger) and psychological (self-efficacy, hostility) factors were found in an overindulgent child group while physical health factors were observed in an overindulgent adult group. The factors with the negative effects of online games mostly revealed moderate effects. In overindulgent child and adolescent groups, similar patterns were observed in physical health (health issue, sleep issue, meal issue), psychological factor (self-control, anxiety, depression, self-esteem), relationship (family relationship, interpersonal relationship) and adjustment to school life (satisfaction with school life, compliance with school rules, learning attitude, peer relationship, student-teacher relationship). In an overindulgent adult group, on the contrary, moderate effects were found in psychological factor (self-control, depression, self-esteem, self-efficacy, life satisfaction), behavioral factor (aggression, delinquency, anger, impulsiveness), relationship (family relationship, interpersonal relationship) and adjustment to school life. Fourth, in terms of the positive and negative effects of online games, the size of moderating effects of game player and game-playing time revealed a difference while there was no difference in moderating effects by gender. Specifically, moderating effects by game player were large when both computer and smartphone were used in behavioral factors. In physical health, moderate effects were observed when computer was used. In relational and adaptation factors, moderate effects were found with the use of smartphone. Concerning moderating effects by game-playing time, large effects were observed at less than 2 hours in adjustment factors only. Fifth, according to an in-depth interview, interviewees started to play games for curiosity or by following their parent, brother/sister or friend. In fact, among those who started to play games since they were in elementary school, ‘following a friend’ was mostly responded. Sixth, when asked why they keep playing online games, they responded, ‘pursuit of pleasure through games’, ‘to get reward’, ‘to form a network’ and ‘just a habit’. Specifically, ‘pursuit of pleasure through games’, ‘to get reward’, ‘to form a network’ were positive reasons while ‘just a habit’ was a negative reason. Seventh, in terms of self-assessment on playing games, ‘self’ is categorized as a general use. When it was possible to adjust playing games, positive assessment was given. In addition, when a game brings negative effects, ‘self’ was assessed from a negative perspective. In addition, assessment by others was recognized pessimistically when the respondents were intervened or controlled by their parents or acquaintances. Eighth, in terms of the positive effects of games, the followings were derived: ‘physical ability’, ‘cognitive ability’, ‘virtual experience of future’, ‘acquisition of reward’, ‘increase in confidence’, ‘pursuit of pleasure’, ‘positive family relationship’, ‘expansion of interpersonal relationship’, ‘positive peer relationship’. Concerning negative effects of games, ‘interrupting daily life’, ‘learning disturbance’, ‘addiction’, ‘stress’, ‘behavioral problem’ and ‘conflict with parents’ were derived, showing almost no difference, compared to the factors unveiled through meta-analysis. In terms of game effects, ‘positive recognition’ was high. The gamers with negative perception recognized game effects with a negative perspective when negative effects were greater than positive effects. In conclusion, this study is meaningful in that it has reached convergent conclusion by analyzing the positive and negative effects and context of online games through a mixture of meta-analysis and in-depth interview. In addition, it has suggested a method to prevent game overindulgence and share positive game culture. After all, this study is significant in that it has provided substantial data for program development which can maximize positive effects while minimizing negative effects of games during parent/teacher training and consultation.
