This study aims to devise and verify the effects of a teaching- learning model based on Problem Based Learning for learners of Korean for Academic Purpose. With a rising emphasis on the importance of communicative education, a number of domestic universities are increasingly attempting to incorporate teaching methods which minimizes the process of conveying knowledge and instead, pushes students to reach resolutions through independent exploration. However, many international students who have not yet received education on Korean for Academic Purpose face difficulties in reaching the college-level academic requirements. This academic struggle roots not only from their insufficiency in the Korean language itself, but more importantly, from their inability to adjust to the introduction of the new education paradigm. This study hypothesized that Problem Based Learning would help these international students improve their academic abilities to meet the standards of domestic universities. Based on this hypothesis, this study applied the K-PBL teaching learning model on Korean elective classes in a university in Seoul (hereafter noted as university A), in order to examine its effects on learners of Korean for Academic Purpose. For higher accuracy, the study was executed twice, under identical conditions, over the course of two semesters. The classes proceeded for 16 weeks, with one class acting as a control group, and the other as the experimental group. This study analyzed the results of the preliminary evaluation, mid term and final exams of both classes. The mid term exam results saw no significant statistical difference between the two classes, while the final exam saw only a relevant difference in the reading and writing section results. Additionally, surveys were conducted on both groups regarding the definition section, which assesses the students’ ability to define vocabulary and expressions. Conducted both before and after the courses, the surveys were subdivided into three sections each corresponding to interest, participation, and confidence. As a result, there were significant statistical differences in all three areas. Further surveys and interviews led on the experimental group following the study showed that the learners perceived the classes with the K-PBL model to have helped increase their problem solving abilities, high-cognitive thinking abilities, self-directed learning abilities, cooperative learning abilities, and Korean language abilities. At the same time however, the interviews highlighted a clear need for education on Digital Literacy in order to lead courses centered on Problem Based Learning. As a solution, a final K-PBL teaching learning model encompassing Digital Literacy education was devised. The findings of this study will hopefully provide a foundation for future research on Problem Based Learning in Korean for Academic Purpose education.
