A movie can be said as a mirror of the age because it reveals unconscious world views and makes it possible to easily approach social issues. Film noirs were created under the influence that European people who sought asylum in the United States due to the First and Second World Wars exerted on Hollywood. These movies portrayed the gloomy social situations of the time. The uneasiness of American people were reflected in nihilism caused by the World Wars, in Freud's psychoanalysis and in the matter of human alienation. Likewise, Hong Kong noirs reflected the psychology of Hong Kong people who faced the tremendous change in 1997, which was "the return of Hong Kong." This is similar to the anxiety of Americans triggered by the World Wars and their concern over an uncertain future. This is the case for Korean film noirs as well. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine the aspects and meanings of family in Korean film noirs from the 1990s to the 2000s. During the period between the 1990s and the present time of the 2000s, Korean film noirs have continued to be produced and exercised a direct or indirect influence on movies of other genres. To achieve the purpose of the study, the beginning of film noirs was discussed first, and then Korean film noirs that were produced in the 1990s under the influence of Hong Kong noirs of the 1980s were examined. Specifically, this study attempted to focus on the aspects and meanings of family in Korean film noirs in the 2000s. To understand the text of a movie, the diverse political, economic, social and cultural contexts of the society where it is produced should all be taken into account to have a profound discussion as much as possible. So this study tried to focus on the circumstances of the times when Korean film noirs were released. In the 1990s, Korean film noirs almost imitated Hong Kong ones of the 1980s. Even the strongest icon of the latter was imitated, and no families appeared in these Korean noirs, like the Hong Kong ones. Family can easily be seen in other genres, but it was a far cry from the unique features of noirs. Since the 2000s, however, families that couldn't be found in Hong Kong noirs started to appear in Korean noirs. The reason was that the gravity of "family disorganization" was brought to public attention in the wake of the 1997 IMF financial crisis. In the 1990s, there was a high-speed growth in Korean economy, and family diversification and family problems surfaced in this period along with the emergence of informatization, globalization and capitalism. In particular, the mounting unemployment rate and social polarization after the IMF financial crisis were followed by conflicts between social classes and between generations, and the functions of family were increasingly impaired along with family disorganization. Moreover, the authority of the head of household was diminished, and the weight of paternal roles were remarkably on the decrease. The phenomena had a huge impact on the changes in family forms and in the relationships of family members. The period of the IMF financial crisis, which is the so-called biggest crisis after the Korean War, was a period when it's realized that the existence and sustainability of family couldn't be guaranteed forever. Accordingly, the appearance of families in the Korean noirs in the 2000s could be said as the result of the aftereffect of the IMF crisis. The main characters who were represented as economically incompetent people due to the IMF crisis, as men and as fathers yearned to recover their masculinity and return to patriarchy that was based on traditional nepotism. The findings of the study on the aspects of family in Korean noirs could be summarized as follows: First, the Korean traditional family is dominated by patriarchal order, and the family members have to obey the father, who was the great man, and have to follow his instructions. The cause of this logic is that they are educated to comply with patriarchal order amid the national violence of Korean society. Second, a pseudo-family that is built on loyalty and violence is identified as a fake family. The majority of the leading characters are considered to be family members when they are beneficial to the organization that they belong to, but they are severely punished or forsaken when they aren't. Third, an artificial family as a reference group is a family that is recreated through compassion or unity. The rebirth of a Korean-type family is described in the narratives that the leading characters who are totally unrelated by blood and who can never be accepted as family members are accepted as family members. Fourth, the discovery of a new family showed that a neighbor could be a more genuine member of family than a real one. It implies that people are overly individualized and undergo a change in their consciousness, which is to give top priority to their own interest only even in terms of family relations without considering their own families. Fifth, the rediscovery of a family is vividly portrayed. Since there are a lot of ethnic Korean citizens of mainland China in Korea, they no longer look like foreigners. Actually, however, they feel so isolated that they feel like an alien, and they are thrown into confusion in terms of identity. The main characters who are isolated and lonely try to be connected with other lonely people as brothers to build a true family because they already knew that the pseudo- family of the crime organization to which each of them belongs is fake. Thus, there are contextual descriptions of current serious social issues of Korean society in the Korean noirs, such as family crisis, the crisis of patriarchy, structural violence, cultural violence, neo- liberalism, unlimited competition, inequity, unfairness, and injustice. This study is expected to make it possible to have an accurate understanding of the trend in the production of Korean noirs to lay the foundation for the production of more advanced Korean noirs.
