ABSTRACT
Development and Validation of the Teaching Efficacy Scale for Early Childhood Teachers
LEE, Jung Mi Dept. of Early Childhood Education Graduate School Duksung Women’s University
The purpose of this study is to analyze ‘Ages 3-5 Nuri Curriculum’ and the integrated evaluation index of early childhood education institutions on the basis of Bandura's efficacy expectation theory and to develop the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers that applied teachers' roles. The study issues determined for the purpose are presented as follows:
1. How is the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers? 2. How are reliability and validity of teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers?
This researcher looked into the range of the scale which can commonly be applied to teachers of young children aged 3-5 in an early childhood education field, and selected physical environment design & daily management, daily-life guidance, and teaching-learning methods as the factors of the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers. Based on these factors, 60 items were developed in theoretical discussion process. In terms of content validity, the developed items were examined three times by 12 experts on early childhood education and child care. As the result of the content validity examination, the items of the scale for preliminary research were 50 items in three factors. To examine the factors of this preliminary scale and item validity, data were collected from 307 teachers in charge of the class of young children in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. To find the quality of items, the mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) and item-total correlation were calculated. According to the analysis, there was no extreme mean value or standard deviation and no item reduction. According to exploratory factor analysis, the total variate of the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers had the explanatory power of 62.94%. ‘The teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers’ was finally confirmed to be composed of a total of 50 items: 17 items in the 1st factor 'physical environment design and daily management', 14 items in the 2nd factor 'daily-life guidance', and 19 items in the 3rd factor 'teaching-learning methods'. In this study, data were collected from 539 teachers in charge of the class of children aged 3-5 at kindergartens and child care centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. With the collected data, item analysis, reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, concurrent validity analysis, and inter-group difference analysis were conducted. The results of these analyses are presented as follows: First, according to the calculation of the mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) and item-total correlation, the items in each factor were designed appropriately. In other words, the mean (M) of each item was in the proper range between 3.61 and 4.34, and the standard deviation (SD) was between .73 and 1.47. Therefore, there was no extreme deviation. According to the reliability analysis, Cronbach’s alpha of each area was .95-.96, and total Cronbach’s alpha was .98. As a result, there was high internal consistency reliability. Secondly, according to the confirmatory factor analysis, the 3rd factor model was the most appropriate. The fit indexes of the measured model were (df32)=138.84(p=.000), NFI=.98, TLI=.97, CFI=.98, and RMSEA=.08, all which met the recommended fit values. Thirdly, according to the concurrent validity analysis, ‘the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers’ developed in this study had high correlations with Teacher Self-efficacy Scale (Bandura, 2006) and Early Childhood Teacher Efficacy Scale (Seon-young Kim, So-jeong Seoh, 2010). Aside from that, the two tools (Bandura, 2006; Seon-young Kim, So-jeong Seoh, 2010) were involved in the factors-teaching -learning methods and physical environment design & daily management-of the developed scale. In the developed scale, the newly extracted factor which had differentiation from existing tools was the teaching efficacy of daily-life guidance. It means that ‘the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers’ was different from the tools used in previous studies. Fourthly, according to the inter-group difference analysis, teachers at kindergartens and child care centers had no difference in the teaching efficacy level for early childhood teachers, depending on the organization type. The teaching efficacy for early childhood teachers was different in each one of the three factors depending on career. In case of physical environment design & daily management, teachers with 3-9 years of career had a higher value than those with less than 3 years of career. In case of daily-life guidance, teachers with 6-9 years of career had a higher value than those with less than 3 years of career. In case of teaching-learning methods, teachers with more than 9 years of career had a higher value than those with 6-9 years of career who had a higher value than those with 3-6 years of career who had a higher value of those with less than 3 years of career. Regarding the teaching efficacy for early childhood teachers depending on teacher's age, there were significant differences in physical environment design & daily management and teaching-learning methods. In case of physical environment design & daily management, teachers aged more than 25 had a higher value than those aged 21-25. In case of teaching-learning methods, teachers aged more than 30 had a higher value than those aged 21-30. Regarding the teaching efficacy for early childhood teachers depending on education, in physical environment design & daily management, daily-life guidance, and teaching-learning methods, teachers who graduated from 4-year university or higher had higher values than those who graduated from college or lower. Regarding the teaching efficacy for early childhood teachers depending on young children's age, in physical environment design & daily management and teaching-learning methods, teachers for the class of young children aged 5 had a higher value than those for the class of young children aged 3. The two factors were found to have a low level of effect size. In conclusion, ‘the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers’ developed in this study was a valid and reliable tool. Therefore, the developed scale can become a useful tool to measure the overall teaching efficacy level of early childhood teachers when Nuri Curriculum and the integrated evaluation index of early childhood education institutions are applied. Furthermore, ‘the teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers’ is expected to become a practical index for the roles of early childhood teachers as instructors.
