The purposes of this study were to explore the relationship between fear of positive evaluation, internalized shame, negative self-concept and social anxiety in college students and to verify the moderating effects of internalized shame and negative self-concept on the relationship between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety. To accomplish these, 370 college students in Daegu, Busan and Ulsan metropolitan city were asked to complete Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale(FPES), Internalized Shame Scale(ISS), Negative Concept of Social Self(NCSS) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale(SIAS) and in the end, 352 data were included. Using SPSS 23.0, the collected data were examined through correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. First, the results indicated that there is a significant correlation between fear of positive evaluation, internalized shame, negative self-concept and social anxiety. Second, it was shown that internalized shame has moderating effects on the relationship between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety. The findings also showed that negative self-concept has moderating effects on the relationship between fear of positive evaluation and social anxiety. In this study, it is confirmed that internalized shame and negative self-concept have moderating effects on social anxiety among college students with the fear of positive evaluation. That is, the less internalized shame and negative self-concept, the less likely for college students with fear of positive evaluation to experience social anxiety. Therefore, this study suggests that an environment or program should be provided to alleviate internalized shame and overcome negative self-concept among college students. It also shows that therapeutic intervention for students with internalized shame and negative self-concept is effective when it comes to mitigating social anxiety among those with the fear of positive evaluation.
