The purpose of this study was to provide a fundamental data of development of guideline and early management program to identify the factors which associated the smartphone overindulgence of preschool children. Data were collected on 184 mothers of preschool children enrolled in daycare centers and kindergartens in Jeollabuk-do Province from January, 1, to March 3, 2018. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA with duncan post hoc test, pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted with SPSS WIN 24.0.
The results of this research are as followings:
1. Average age at which child started using smartphone was 3.39±1.88 years, and 108 cases (58.7%) were the most among 5~6 years old. Average hour at which child use smartphone per day was 1.04±0.85 hours, and the most frequent use was 1~2 hours per day in 57 cases (31.0%), The frequency of smartphone usage of child per week was dominantly 1~2 days per week of 83 cases (45.1%). Average hour at which mother’s smartphone usage time was 2.51±1.96 hours, and the use of 2~3 hours per day was 48 cases (26.1 %).
2. The average score of the self regulation of preschool children was 3.46±0.57 out of 5 points, and the average score of the parenting efficacy of mothers was 3.52±0.53 out of 5 points. The average score of the mother-child interaction was 3.75±0.55 out of 5 points. The average score of the smartphone overindulgence of the preschool children was 2.22±0.81 out of 5 points. 3. Differences of smartphone overindulgence according to demographic characteristics were examined, and thus, the signigicant differ ences between job of mother (F=3.76, p=.025), age of children (F=4.78, p=.003), and primary caregiver (F=5.68, p=.001) were found. Differences of smartphone overindulgence according to characteristics of smartphone usage of participants were examined, and thus, the signigicant differences between age at which child started using smartphone (F=7.44, p<.001), average hour at which child use smartphone per day (F=17.11, p<.001), frequency of smartphone usage of child per week(F=9.26, p<.001), and average hour at which mother use smartphone per day (F=8.02, p<.001).
4. The smartphone overindulgence of preschool children negatively correlated with self regulation (r=-.50, p<.001), parenting efficacy (r=-.38, p<.001), and mother-child interaction (r=-.45, p<.001)
5. As a result of analyzing the relative influence of variables affecting the smartphone overindulgence of the preschool children, the self regulation (β=-.343, p<.001) showed the most association on the smartphone overindulgence. When the child's use of smartphone was more than 3 hours (β=.280, p<.001), it was the second most associating variable. Additional associating factors were the use of smartphone by the preschool child for 2~3 hours (β=.265, p=.002), 1~2 hours (β=.202, p=.020), child uses a smartphone for 1~2 days per week (β=-.189, p=.030), the mother's usage time for a smartphone is less than one hour (β=-.156, p=.025). In other words, when preschool children have high self regulation, use of smartphone for 1~2 days per week, the mother's usage time of the smartphone is less than 1 hour, the smartphone overindulgence of the preschool children is low.
The results of this study showed the factor that associated smartphone overindulgence of preschool children essentially and powerfully was self regulation of children. In addition, as the time of smartphone usage of children increased consistently, so they intended to depend on smartphone continuously. Particularly, when child use smartphone 1~2 days per week and when mother use smartphone less than 1 hour, smartphone overindulgence were decreased. In the future, research should be conducted to identify various factors that may associate the preschool children's smartphone overindulgence. Based on this, a study will be conducted to develop preventive guidelines and early intervention programs.
