Factors related to children's self-control ability and smartphone use Impact on Smartphone Overdependence원문보기

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively analyze the influence of smartphone use-related variables and self-control ability that reflect children's own control or regulatory characteristics in analyzing variables affecting children's dependence on smartphones. Through this, this study aims to find ways to prevent and mediate children's dependence on smartphones. For this purpose, this study conducted a survey of 360 fifth and sixth graders located in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. The reason why 5th and 6th graders were selected is that higher grades often have their own smartphones than lower grades (Choi Dong-hyun, 2017), and the perception of self-behavior and emotional state was relatively higher than lower grades, so they could respond appropriately to the survey. In this study, children's dependence on smartphones was measured by a standardized smartphone addiction diagnosis scale developed by the Korea Intelligence and Information Society Agency (2011), which includes four sub-factors: daily life disorder, withdrawal, resistance, and virtual world orientation. For the self-control ability measurement, the scale of Lee Young-joo (2008), who modified and supplemented the sentence expression in consideration of the characteristics of the times, was used for the self-control test produced by Grasnmick, Tittle, Burski, and Arneklev (1993). As variables related to children's smartphone use, the timing of smartphone ownership, average smartphone use time per day, and were investigated. All investigations were conducted after deliberation and approval by the Bioethics Committee of Chonnam National University. For the collected data, descriptive statistical analysis and reliability analysis, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were performed using the SPSS 27.0 program. The summary of the result of this study is as follows. First, in both the overall and sub-factors of smartphone overdependence, the target children's overdependence score was lower than the standard score of the smartphone overdependence risk group. It was found that more than half of the respondents said they were in the 1st and 2nd grades before entering elementary school and had been using smartphones since the early days. The average daily smartphone usage time showed a similar response rate of 15-20% in all sections from more than 1 hour to more than 5 hours, especially when used for more than 5 hours. Second, as a result of examining whether there is a difference in the degree of dependence according to the time of possession and use of a smartphone, only the difference according to the use time was statistically significant. In other words, it was found that the longer the use time, the higher the tendency to over-dependence. Third, as a result of conducting a hierarchical regression analysis to find out the influence of children's self-control ability, the variable that best explains smartphone overdependence was self-control ability. However, the factors affecting each sub-factor and the magnitude of influence were different. The results of this study show that the average daily smartphone usage time and self-control ability of high school children have a great influence on their smartphone dependence, and the degree of influence varies depending on the sub-factors of the symptoms of overdependence. These results imply that efforts on children's desirable smartphone use should be made by children as the center and subject. It also suggests the need to first identify the symptoms that appear according to smartphone overdependence and to take an approach to alleviate overdependence based on related variables.
