Unlike the general agricultural environment, school gardens have been managed by non-expert teachers and there is also a possibility that the management of school gardens may be unstable and insufficient because the staff members in charge of school gardens are frequently replaced according to the schedule of school personnel administration. The objectives of this study were to analyze the physicochemical properties and the heavy metal content of the garden soils of 30 elementary schools in Suwon City and to look into the relevance between the characteristics of school garden soils and soil management. A survey was also taken about the use and utilization of school gardens. The soil survey included particle size analysis, pH, EC1:5, organic matter content, available phosphorus content, exchangeable cation content (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+), CEC (cation exchange capacity), total nitrogen (total-N), and heavy metal content (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, As). The questionnaire consists of 18 items in five categories: status of school gardens; management of school garden; fertilization and irrigation; control of pests and weeds; school gardening plans. A total of 31 school garden soil samples were collected and 27 questionnaires were filled out by school staff members. The analysis of the physicochemical properties and nutrients of the school garden soils revealed in this study showed that the average pH level (7.23) of school garden soil and the exchangeable Ca2+ content (12.02 cmolckg-1) measured in this survey were higher than those (pH (6.3) and the exchangeable Ca2+ content (6.4 cmolckg-1) in the upland soil) that were measured by the National Institute of Agricultural Science in 2013. It is also revealed that organic matter content (48.6 g kg-1), exchangeable Mg2 + content (2.34 cmolc kg-1), and exchangeable K+ content (1.20 cmolc kg-1) in the school garden soil were also higher than those in the upland soil (organic matter content: 25 g kg-1; exchangeable Mg2 +; 1.7 cmolckg-1; exchangeable K+; 0.75 cmolckg-1). According to the analysis of the soil texture of 31 school garden soils, 17 schools (55%) were sandy loam; 13 schools (52%) were loamy sand; and 1 school (3%) was sand. The analysis result also says that the content of heavy metals(Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As) in the school garden soil did not exceed the concern level of the soil contamination in the region1 according to the Soil Environment Conservation Act of Korea: Cd, 4 mg kg-1; Cu, 150 mg kg-1; Pb, 200 mg kg-1; Zn, 300 mg kg-1; and As, 25 mg kg-1. The survey showed that 7 (29%) out of 27 schools (that responded to the survey) had involved their school community members in school gardening program for 4 years and gardening area ranges in size from 15m2 to 1,550m2, with an average of 195 m2. The crops grown in the school gardens in the first half of the year are shown to be tomato (including cherry tomato, 85%), lettuce (85%), pepper (81%) and egg plant (61%). It was also revealed that Chinese cabbages (77%) and radish (58%) were usually grown during the second half of the year. According to this survey, 24 out of 27 schools responded that the fertilizer was applied to their school gardens: 10 schools (42%) used compound fertilizers; 5 schools (21%) applied oil cakes; and 6 schools (25%) use other manures to their school garden. Ten schools (42%) applied base manure to their school gardens once a year and 12 schools (52%) did twice a year. In case of topdressing, 9 schools (30%) top-dressed their school gardens once a year and 6 schools (26%) did twice a year. There were 10 schools (44%) which did not apply any fertilizers during crop cultivation. According to the study, it is revealed that the school garden soils in Suwon area were not well-balanced in soil nutrients and most of them do not have a long gardening history. What is even worse, most of school community staffs rarely recognize the necessity or importance of school gardening, let alone the knowledge about physicochemical properties of soil. One of the best ways that can emotionally stabilize the students who spend most of their daytime in school and increase their emotional intelligence is a school gardening program in conjunction with the regular or a extra course of study in a school (such as science, practicum, creative experiential activities, and intelligent life). It is strongly believed that systematic sustainable management and education of school gardening at national or local levels are needed, such as the SFN (School Farms Network) in the UK, School and Youth Gardening in the USA, and the Japanese school farm activities.
