The trend around NGOs (non-governmental organization) shows that both the rapid growth of civil societies and the highlighted importance of civic-group-driven activities for public good encourage the steady increase in the number of non-profit civil groups, and result in the decrease in the size of domestic donation, culminating to its pinnacle in 2013.
The change in demographics reveals the fact that the ratio of participation in donation among the over-15-year-old population reached the peak of 36.0% in 2011, and then has kept declining, and that the decrease in the ratio of participation in donation is found to be correlated with the decline of economic growth rate.
Meanwhile, the change in perception and attitude of donation was surveyed in 2016 as a part of social examination initiated by KOSTAT. The largest portion occupied in the compulsory area for the dissemination of overall society-wide donation-promoting culture is both the fortified transparency of charity-organizations’ donation fund management and the ease of donation methods As for the key consideration in case where the donation groups or organizations are to be selected, the most commented buzzwords are the transparent management of donation fund and of donation programs
Blockchain technology is well known for the technological enabler that underpins the Bitcoin, but has more than that. It can enable transparency and reliability to be secured with a low cost, and gives an advantage for the security beef-up. That’s why it has attracted our interest and attention across the various spectrum of industries, and so it is expected to play a crucial role in the age of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
World Economic Forum(WEF) made it public that by 2025 the 10% of the global GDP will be generated from the blockchain-based technology or its application. Gartner, the well-known global research firm, predicted that blockchain-related business will grow up to $10 billion by 2022. Blockchain technology has a high potential to be the key platform for the new era, which can ensure both the donator/sponsor-required transparency of non-profit organizations and their fund management and the drastic reduction of transaction cost. It is the most optimized technology for the NGOs that have to manage their IT operation and security under the insufficient budget.
Blockchain technology has a clear merit for transparency and security, so many corporations have undertaken the systematic research and pilot attempts. But most of non-profit organizations are left behind in this race because there are few currently researched cases and not many proven applications.
Therefore this research aims to undertake the empirical study on the factors influencing the intention of acceptance for the NGOs’ use of blockchain technology.
This paper begins with the categorization of non-profit organizations, and gathers the data relevant to the use of blochchain technology, reviews the characteristics of this technology, searches for previous theories, and undergoes the literature review. And then the research model will be designed and its hypotheses derived. Our research model will be based on UTAUT. The variables such as ‘Performance expectancy’ and ‘Effort expectancy’ will serve as preceding factors. Blockchain technology is to be described in this model with the variables such as ‘Security’, ‘Reliability’, ‘Diversity’, ‘Economical efficiency’, ‘Availability’. For the purpose of empirical analysis, the survey was conducted among NGO employees. The total 155 questionnaires were collected with input-error or input-missing ones filtered out, and then were used as input data for our analysis. SPSS 18.0 and SmartPLS 3.0 were used for this analysis.
Every hypothesis was verified with SmartPLS 3.0, the SEM-dedicated software, where SEM is Structure Equation Model. The analysis results confirms that ◦ ‘Reliability’ is found to affect both ‘Effort expectancy’ and ◦ ‘Performance expectancy’, ‘Diversity’ to affect ‘Performance expectancy’, ◦ ‘Economical efficiency’ to affect both ‘Effort expectancy’ and ‘Performance expectancy’, and ◦ ‘Performance expectancy’, ‘Social influence’, ‘Facilitating conditions’ to affect the intention of acceptance for the NGOs’ use of blockchain technology
In addition, the analysis result demonstrates that the moderating effects resulting from either the size of organization or innovation is found not to affect the intention of acceptance Finally this research suggests the implication for the introduction and use of blockchain in NGOs, and discusses limitations of this study and the future research topics.
