Study of the Method of Training Michael Chekhov's Technique of Acting : Focused on the Creation of the Role of Nora in the Performance 원문보기

This study aims to conduct a practical study based on the understanding of the acting technique of Michael Chekhov, who had a great influence on the development of modern acting methodology. For this purpose, this study would help a comprehensive understanding of the creation of the role of an actor, discussing the theoretical principles and practical training methods of the technique of acting. Especially, this study would investigate the construction of a character by combining the technique of acting through the role of Nora in Noraism that adapted Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Michael Chekhov has learned acting under famous directors like Constantin Stanislavski and Eugene Vakhtangov but thought that he could expect new acting any more from the construction of a character based on experience and memory. Thus, he opened a studio himself to create characters through individual imagination and images and constructed an original acting methodology, training together with several workers. The core of the technique of acting is based on the perception about the organic correlation between the psychology that creates an imaginary body and the body through the actor’s imagination and image. Michael Chekhov said that the answer to the creation of a character is in the body and argued that the expression of imagination using the body would be a source of the creation of new acting. This means the expression of a close relationship between psychology and the body through imagination and the ability to experience immediate stimulation through the body, not depending on emotional memory. Thus, this study investigated the properties of the technique of acting based on the construction of an image utilizing the actor’s imagination emphasized by Michael Chekhov and applied the core principles to the construction a real character. This study proceeded with the courses, including imagination and image, the director’s guiding question, psychological gestures, and impromptu and ensemble, applying the principles to the construction of the role of Nora in Noraism. Ultimately, this study would reveal the delicate expression of a character and the purpose of the role through the imaginary body and investigate the effect it brings about in combination with various elements of performance. Michael Chekhov’s technique that emphasized the psychology-body harmony is characterized by the possibility of diverse variations through the actor’s actual application. It enables actors to realize the importance of the human unconsciousness, self, imagination, and image, rather than presenting the right answer to them and to have their whole choice and authority in building the role. In this sense, this study would be helpful as a practical plan for the creation and development of acting today, which requires diversity.
