Effects of recognition level to material safety data sheets on handling hazardous chemicals among dental hygienist
Cha, a-reum (Advisor : Prof. Moon, Deog-Hwan, Ph.D.) Graduate School of Public Health, Inje University
Objective : This study was conducted to prepare fundamental data and assess to effects of recognition level to material safety data sheets(MSDS) on handling hazardous chemicals among dental hygienist.
Method : This study was carried out a questionnaire survey to number of 301 dental hygienists in dental clinic and hospital of Busan metro city and Kyung-nam provinces using self-administer structured questionnaires from May 21st to 31st, 2018. The contents of the questionnaire consisted of social demographic characteristics(3 items), work characteristics(4 items), and MSDS education characteristics(3 items), and handling hazardous chemicals(6 items), recognition to MSDS(7 items), importance of MSDS(15 items). The collected data was analyzed using statistical package programme SPSS(Version 18.0).
Results : The mean level was 3.41 points for the practice of chemical handling, 2.99 points for the MSDS recognition, and 4.30 points for the importance of MSDS. The level of MSDS importance was higher in hospitals than in clinics, and MSDS recognition and MSDS importance were effecting factors on handling hazardous chemicals.
Conclusion : As above results, the author consider that it should be need to increase the level of MSDS importance and MSDS recognition in order to improve the handling of chemical substances by dental hygienists who handle and manage dental materials that contain several hazardous chemicals. In addition, in order to increase the level of MSDS recognition, it is necessary the education to MSDS for dental hygienist. In order to increase the level of MSDS importance, medical certification is required at dental clinic such as dental hospitals, and safety and health education for MSDS must be implemented in work places of directly handling hazardous chemicals.
