Picture books have largely been perceived as books for children who do not have fully-fledged reading and writing skills. However, recent social discourse on picture books signifies a deviation from this prejudice, i.e., picture books can provide a meaningful reading experience to older audiences. This study regards picture books as an all-encompassing medium that acquires meaning through the interaction between the internal factors inherent in these books (the physical and visual nature of the books, their stories, and their themes) and the external factors (authors and readers). Picture book salons are also an emerging trend in Korea facilitating interaction between authors and readers. Based on these theoretical discussions, in this study, I review the concept of picture books and book curation, define the notion of “picture book curation,” and conduct a case study on picture book curation. I then explore the value of picture books and discuss the meaning of picture book curation. My research addresses five picture book salons in Korea, identified through the 2018 Map of Picture Book Salons published by the Picture book Association. I interviewed owners of five picture book salons to discuss the value and meaning of picture book curation. The curators all noted that their lives largely revolved around books and that their attention was drawn to picture books sometime later during their life. They said that their experience of raising children, working as librarians, and running a bookstore gave them a new insight into picture books, which, in turn, led to an operational definition of picture books. The curators, all inspired by picture books, share similar activities and have similar spatial arrangements at their salons. Their activities bring participants together to read books and talk about them, while their shops are spatially arranged in such a manner that it creates a suitable environment for reading and appreciating picture books. My this study suggests that although curators treat picture books simply as one of many books, there is a subjectivity toward picture books, which arises from the special feeling that these books induce. In terms of content, picture books cover almost any theme, but with more diverse forms and expression methods compared to conventional print books. Picture books are also creative in that they build upon existing methods to produce something new. Last, but not the least, picture books are culturally more egalitarian than other media due to the nature of their components, i.e., themes and pictures. These attributes make picture books a more approachable and beneficial option for readers—they challenge readers to look back on themselves and their life.
