With the increased number of mobile users resulting from the widespread distribution of smartphones, social networking services have shifted direction from short-text content to multimedia content such as videos and images. A lot of snack-culture videos have been uploaded on YouTube, a video sharing service, but recently many useful educational materials are being uploaded as well. Thus, the study aims at proposing a metadata framework that enables to search not only whole videos but also video segments to make use of educational videos on YouTube. For this end, the metadata elements of YouTube and Vimeo videos including those of Netflix and Korean Film Archive were analyzed. Furthermore, three multimedia metadata standards of PBCore, TV-Anytime and MPEG-7 were analyzed and compared. The design process of the metadata framework proposed above is as follows. First, we split the metadata framework into auto-extractible metadata and uploader-assigned metadata. As for the auto-extractible metadata, the physical, bibliographical, and content analysis data (storyboard, video scheme) are extracted from a video using software. Afterwards, segment data are extracted based on the content-analysis data. Then, recommendation data and user-evaluation data are extracted through analyzing the data on social media. Later, the auto-extracted metadata and the uploader-assigned metadata are integrated and stored in the metadata storage. As a result, we proposed a metadata framework consisted of 33 elements; 17 elements auto-extracted from videos, 6 elements auto-extracted from social media platforms, and 10 elements assigned by uploaders. To evaluate the proposed metadata framework, we conducted a survey using 20 participants recruited as metadata experts—16 corporate employees, and 4 university librarians. The survey measured the suitability of each metadata element using a 5-point Likert scale, and collected further opinions through a free-response section. As a result, the ‘duration’ element that belongs to the auto-extracted metadata and the ‘title’ and ‘content description’ elements that belong to the uploader-assigned metadata have high suitability values. Through the free-response section, it was suggested that 33 elements are not enough, and that it would be more effective to gather more metadata elements and then utilize them. Taking this suggestion into account, we added one element each to the auto-extracted and uploader-assigned metadatas respectively, and proposed a total of 35 metadata elements.
