Lifestyles where simple meals are eaten alone, are becoming increasingly common due to the rapid increase in one-person households and busy social lives, and other similar factors. Many previous studies have investigated the effects of eating family meals rather than lone meals, targeting children or teenagers, and there have been insufficient studies on the dietary characteristics of adults who eat alone. Accordingly, the present study aimed to analyze the dietary characteristics of lone eaters, and compared them by age and gender, to provide data to help improve the diet of people who eat alone. For this study, 2,305 adults over 20 years of age, who participated in the dietary intake survey of the 2013-2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and reported eating all their meals alone in the previous year were selected as subjects. Subjects were stratified by age into young (20-34 years), prime-aged (35-49 years), middle-aged (50-64 years), and elderly (65 years or older) groups. In addition, they were stratified into male and female. Dietary characteristics such as the number of meals per day and the frequency of each meal per week, and meal diversity such as the food group consumption pattern, number of dishes consumed per day, and number of foods consumed per day, were analyzed and the energy and nutrient consumption was compared by age and gender. Results indicated that subjects who ate alone consumed 2.5 meals per day, with 2.2 in the young group and 2.7 in the elderly group. There was a significant difference in the number of meals consumed per day among age groups (p<0.001). Breakfast showed the greatest difference in frequency among age groups; only 27.4% in the young group consumed breakfast“5-7 times per week”, whereas 43.1% in the prime-aged group, 66.3% in the middle-aged group and 87.7% in the elderly group consumed breakfast with the same frequency (p<0.001). The average frequency of eating out per week was 2.4; the frequency of eating out in male (3.3) was significantly higher than that in female (1.6) (p<0.001). In addition, it tended to decrease as the age increased. In the young age group, an average of 9 dishes were consumed per day, significantly less than other age groups (p<0.001); 1.7 dishes were consumed at breakfast (p<0.001), 3.2 at lunch (p=0.001), and 4.1 at dinner (p=0.175). Lone eaters in the other age groups showed less difference in the number of dishes consumed for each meal. Although the daily number of dishes consumed by the elderly group was 11.7, significantly more than the young group (p<0.001), the number of foods consumed per day was less (7.4 foods vs 7.5 foods in the young group, p<0.001). The energy intake contribution rate from carbohydrate increased and that from fat decreased as the age increased. Female showed lower intake than male in all nutrients except vitamin C. The number of nutrients with the INQ (Index of Nutrition Quality) less than 1.0 was 3 in the young group, 2 in the prime-aged group, 1 in the middle-aged group, and 3 in the elderly group, which was lower than other age groups. The NAR (Nutrient Adequacy Ratio) of all nutrients, except vitamin C, in male was higher than that of female; however, the number of nutrients with less than 1.0 of INQ was higher than female. Dietary diversity score scored 3.6 points for male and 3.9 points for female (p<0.001), showing more various food group intake in female. In terms of food group consumption pattern, the grain+meat+vegetable pattern was most common in the young and prime-aged groups at 25.9% and 26.3%, respectively, while the grain+meat+vegetable+fruit pattern was most common in the middle-aged and elderly groups at 34.2% and 28.4%, respectively. The ideal pattern that includes all of the five food groups was least common in the elderly lone eaters, with just 16.4% following this pattern (p<0.001). With increasing age, energy consumption rate from carbohydrate increased and that from fat decreased (p<0.001). These results indicate that young adults who eat alone were more likely to skip breakfast, and to have most diversity in their food consumption at dinner, demonstrating that the amount and quality of each meal were unbalanced compared with other age groups. In contrast, in the elderly group there was a lack of diversity in the foods consumed, and aside from carbohydrate, the daily intake of most nutrients was deficient. The overall deficiency of nutrient intake was needed to be improved in female, whereas male’s meal needed to be improved in terms of food diversity. Therefore, age-and gender-specific dietary support will be necessary to improve dietary problems of adult who eat alone.
