The purpose of this study is to identify the correlation between adolescents obesity and their sleep behaviors by understanding of adolescents body mass index (BMI) status so to be helpful of obesity management programs and health education for adolescents. This study was conducted on 60,392 in total out of 62,276 adolescents from 799 sample schools who participated in the 13th Adolescents Health Behavior Online Survey in 2017 (30,062 middle school students, 30,330 high school students) with the exception of 1,884 students who were omitted from their weight and height measurement. According to the study, the average body mass index (BMI) of middle school students was 20.57 kg/m2, while that of high school students was 21.83 kg/m2, and as the obesity group of high school students was 33.2%, their obesity rate was higher than that of middle school students(21.7%). For adolescents obesity by sociodemographic characteristics, the obesity rate of male students was about two times higher than that of female students both in middle and high school, and as their subjective home economic level was at 'low' than that at 'high' or 'middle', as low as their subjective academic records was, and as worse as their subjective health condition was, their obesity rate was high as statistically significant. In addition, for adolescents obesity according to their sleep behaviors, based on their sleeping time of 'less than 6 hours' for both middle and high school students, the longer they have sleeping time, the higher their obesity rate was, and particularly, high school students of 'longer than 8 hours' sleeping time showed higher obesity rate. Also, the more they had slept insufficiently, the higher they showed obesity. However, as the result from the logistic regression analysis of obese groups for normal weight groups by using fruit intake, soda intake, and physical activities as confounding variables showed that the variables of sleeping time and sleeping satisfaction were not statistically significant as predictors of obesity. Therefore, it must be considered further variables in addition to the confounders selected in this study and prospective studies are needed to understand the causal relationship between adolescents obesity and their sleeping. Based on the findings of this study, guidances in consideration of gender, subjective economic level, subjective academic records, and subjective health conditions will be needed when operating programs related to obesity and providing health education to adolescents. In addition, even though adolescents sleep behaviors were not significant as predictors of obesity, this study has a meaning that it brought up the need for studies on causal relationship between sleeping and degree of obesity according to classified grades.
