In order to determine the quantitative contributions of PM2.5 in the south-west shore, Korea, filter based samplings using a high volume and a middle volume air samplers, were conducted in the summertime in 2017 and 2018 (total 32 days). Samples were collected for every 6 hours at the upper level on the Research Marine Vessel No. 1. PM2.5 samples were collected on Teflon and Quartz filters for mass concentrations. Water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) by a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer, water soluble ions by a Ion chromatography (IC), organic carbon (OC) & elemental carbon (EC) by a carbon analyzer based on the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH5040) protocol, elemental species by an Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF), and organic molecular markers by a Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MSMS) have been utilized to characterize the collected substrates. The current study investigates that (1) chemical characteristics in PM2.5, (2) source apportionment using the positive matrix factorization (PMF), and (3) the relationship between water-soluble organic compounds of PM2.5 and the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay during the two sampling periods. The overall mean concentration of PM2.5 presents 19.26 µg/m3. The ratio of water soluble to organic carbon provides implication of secondary aerosol formation dominant. The result of Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) also suggests that contribution of a marine oriented biogenic source to PM2.5. PMF source apportionment models used the results to understand the summertime source contributions to PM2.5. Six source categories with reasonably stable profiles were investigated including sulfate rich, Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) rich, nitrate rich, secondary organic source, continental source and biomass burning source. PMF showed three strong events (i.e., long Range transport event, mixing event (sum of long range and sea biogenic), and domestic origin events) in the contributions of sources, as well as dependence on wind transport. Each event was evaluated using the officially published national monitoring data and the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) air parcel trajectory. In addition, relationships between DTT oxidative potential-normalized to sampling volume (DTT-OPv) and PMF result were presented to evaluate the events’ characteristics. Finally, higher associations with DTT oxidative potential-normalized to PM2.5 mass concentration (DTT-OPm) related to simulate aerosol transport from the long range transport, hence, confirmed the impacts of the highest intrinsic oxidation potential.
